It looks like one of those security cameras is going to be set up at 16th & Mission as they have public notice signs posted everywhere. Personally, it'll be interesting to see just how much of a difference it would make. We don't have any statistics to back up this, but our feeling is that the corner sees more low-level like crime-- the occasional drug deal or somebody shooting up and not the more violent stuff. We have no idea how much of that stuff will be caught. We also have no idea how well it would work as it seems anyone could figure out where to go to not be caught on camera. Then again, most of the people at that corner who are doing something illegal aren't quite the most sober minded people.

So, we guess we'll see. If in a few months, 16th & Mission is all shiny and bright and resembles, say, the corner of California and Fillmore then we could say it works. If it looks pretty much the same with the usual suspects around, we'll know it doesn't work.

That's not the only corner where the cameras will be installed. You can see the full list here. And you can read through all of the ACLU's issues with the cameras here.
