But first, the back story. Quilt founder Cleve Jones was at one point made the "Founder for Life" of the Names Project but was let go in 2004. It was Jones who started up the quilt and was the first one to stitch something together, back in 1987. So Jones sued the Names Project for wrongful termination. Thus the lawsuit. The suit was settled in 2005 and as part of the agreement, Jones was to set up his very own non-profit group so he could then get part of the quilt back. The part he was supposed to have gotten was 35 blocks worth- 280 panels in all.

The problem is that Jones had til the end of the year to start a non-profit group, which he did, but had it aligned with the Tides Center. The Names Project is saying that this doesn't count and is making a big out of the fact Jones never filed a 501(c)(3). Yes, they are being snippy about a form. Jones' lawyer, Angelia Alioto. called the whole thing "malicious" which sounds about right, although she somehow left out petty and lame.

Jones has claimed that he kept somebody on the Names Project's board in the loop as he went about all of this. According to him, the board member thought all of this was honky dory. The head of the Names Project, however, said he didn't get the memo and no, none of this is honky dory. The board member Jones was in contact with is travelling right now and cannot be reached for comment.
