To determine all of this, the people in the NewTithing Group measured everyone's income, including investments and all that stuff, and then measured it with the amount of money they gave to charity. According to the numbers, LA's rich donated about 1% of their earnings for about $5,000 per person. Here in the Bay Area, our rich donated only .5% for a total of $3,536 per person. Silicon Valley rich people were even more cheap than our rich people and only gave out a only $2,800 per rich person. Or something like that.
Of course, various people are claiming that the numbers aren't correct and that it's not true but that's what the study says. As an explanation, Dr. Sandra Hernández, chief executive of the San Francisco Foundation, says that it might have something to do with the new vs. old money. Old money can throw money around more than new money can because new money isn't used to the new money and still isn't used to having new money. Also, those pimped out cars don't come cheaply. She also said that a lot of the new money, mainly that in Silicon Valley, is slowly starting to loosen up the purse strings and figure out things to do with all their glorious money.
What this study shows, more than anything, is that our rich people just aren't throwing enough benefits out there. Which means, yes, we need to throw more parties. Get to it Charlotte Mailliard Shultz- due it for our civic pride.
