The surfer, Royce Frailey of Guernville, only got minor wounds and was quickly released from the hospital. In fact, the whole thing is being kind of being pooh-poohed as no big deal, but the whole thing sounds pretty frickin' scary as hell. Reports said he was just paddling along when he felt a surge of water, felt a bite on his leg, and then was dragged down about ten to fifteen feet in the water by the shark. That does NOT sound like a lot of fun.

The last shark attack was 2005 when a surfing instructor was attacked by a 14 foot shark and the last attack near Dillon Beach came in 1996. Experts, of course, say that stuff like this happens but happens rarely and we should not worry about shark attacks. But hat's easy for them to say: they're not the one's getting on a surf board.

Update: The Chron posted pictures of the surfer and the board.

Update on the Update: This wasn't Frailey's only shark incident. He's been bumped before and also helped another victim of a shark attack. And his dad witnessed a shark attack. Memo to Frailey- stay out of the water!
