The idea for an online registry has been around for a while, but only recently did the four California-based organ procurement organizations get the funding to make it a reality.

You are probably used to the pink sticker that you put on your driver's license that indicates you want to be an organ donar. The problem with that is that your license is not always available right when you, uh, die. That means that the necessary consent required to harvest your organs was left up to your grieving relatives to provide. That's a difficult decision at a difficult time and they might not necessarily know about your wish to be a donor. This allows the hospital staff to show them that you did make your wishes known and to carry out those wishes.
