The inagural entry in our shopping guide goes to Rainbow Grocery. We've made no secret of our fondness for Rainbow in the past, but wanted to bring it to your attention as a great place not just for organic produce and Raweos, but it's a great place to pick up gifts for a number of the people on your list.
Rainbow has a great selection of health and beauty products, including hand-milled soaps, fancy-pants toothbrushes, and cruelty-free cosmetics (fantastic stocking stuffers). They have a fabulous selection of books on cooking, health and nutrition, and grass-roots politics (a gentle nudge for a red-state relative, perhaps). They have a small but fun section of childrens' toys, with nary a Barbie or Bratz to be seen.
Some of our favorites were the tin holiday ornaments (pictured - around 7 dollars each), the shiatsu innersoles (9 bucks - we gave these to our mom last year and she swears by them), and the cool Japanese shower curtains (21 dollars). And on your way out, pick up a copy of Giant Robot Magazine ($4.95, the perfect gift for your trapped-in-the-'burbs teenaged hipster cousin).
