The SF school board, never known for its collegial atmosphere, reached new Dick Cheney levels of incivility at last Wednesday's meeting (.pdf agenda), where school board member Heather Hiles (at left) dropped the f-bomb on her fellow school board member Mark Sanchez (at right).
Hiles, who is currently under fire by the San Francisco ethics commisions for her blatant disregard of the local elections $90,000 spending cap, was going at it with Sanchez over the issue of whether teachers should be required to reapply for their jobs at schools designated Dream Schools by the district. Also on the agenda that day was the question of a local school's charter renewal, so the audience was packed with kids.
After a long discussion about the charter issue, Hiles, who was chairing the meeting, attempted to table the teacher rehiring issue. Sanchez then accused her of stonewalling and an argument broke out. Hiles then threatened to throw Sanchez out of the meeting. Sanchez then said, "I don't know what kind of green is clouding your vision at this point." Oooooh. Then Hiles leaned over and said to Sanchez, "shut the f*** up." ....And smackdown!
Both sides now agree that maybe things got a little out of control. Hiles, to her credit, doesn't deny saying it, saying she was worried about losing control of her meeting, and Sanchez continues to maintain that Hiles deliberately set up the meeting to avoid the Dream Schools discussion. Meanwhile, San Francisco schools continue to lag behind.
