It looks like San Francisco middle schools will be getting more full-time armed campus cops, courtesy of a $4 million federal grant awarded to SF last week. This Department of Justice grant would cover wages and benefits for 33 additional officers for 3 years. The officers patrol the campuses, conduct investigations, and generally make themselves available to students. SFPD Lt. Colleen Fatooh says of the students, "They'll come to tell us who was involved in an assault or they may have word something is going to happen". Currently, there are 27 uniformed officers working on school campuses. Even though most SF high schools have full-time officers, the grant could give each middle school its own officers as well. However, no decisions have been made yet regarding how the grant money will be spent. SFist would be interested in your views on this -- are more campus cops a good thing?
