But SF eateries are offering up some game day normalcy for takeout or delivery that’ll help make things feel a bit more familiar.

Despite the still virulent pandemic around us, Super Bowl Sunday has always existed as a celebratory event for Bay Area football fans and those who just tune in for the commercials and mini-concerts put on by modern-day pop icons.

Oh, and then there’s the food, of course.

The league and the NFLPA continue to adhere to their jointly-aligned COVID-19 protocols to mitigate risk throughout #SuperBowl LV week.

For more: https://t.co/ioabBfprNs pic.twitter.com/twIaY26Ql1
— NFL (@NFL) February 3, 2021

While we all get reacquainted with al fresco dining, local restaurants have by no means shied away from offering takeout feasts fit for either one or the whole quarantine pod.

In the name of all things to-go, here are seven Super Bowl Sunday takeout offerings that SFist has deemed are well worth their price tags… and the subsequent outdoor workout sessions they may necessitate.

Alexander’s Steakhouse

The Bay Area-based collection of steakhouses is going in all things hoagies and sandwiches for Super Bowl Sunday. Among the offerings — which include 30-inch long by 5-inch wide heroes subs filled with either chicken cutlets or Italian meats — prime rib dinner and DIY sandwich kits are perfect for feeding your quarantine pod in a hassle-free manner. Pick-up or delivery for their Super Bowl feasts will be Sunday at their Brannan Street location. 448 Brannan Street (SoMa)

AltoVino

The Italian food touchstone at the edge of North Beach and Nob Hill is selling a Super Bowl Party Pack. The kit, itself, includes seven offerings (from glazed chicken wings and pulled pork slider, to mixed nuts and an arrangement of dips) and can be customized to your liking. At $200, it’s described as able to feed four, so let someone else take care of the drinks for Sunday. And if you truly want to go all-in and have an epic cheat(ish)-day, the Japanese-Puertrio fusion restaurant’s omakase plate is a must-eat. The restaurant is also doing a Super Bowl Squares contest for a chance to things like free beer, empanadas, and possibly a dinner for two (and a one-night stay) at the Proper Hotel, which you’ll be able to enter once you purchase your munchies box. For those restaurants that have stayed open as delivery- and takeout-only, today is a day to show solidarity and order from them.

It's called The Great American Takeout (#TheGreatAmericanTakeout), and though it's a promotion that was drummed up by a coalition of corporate restaurant groups — among them Applebee's, Panera Bread, and Chevys Fresh Mex — you can use it as an opportunity to show mass support for your neighborhood businesses.

SFist has this running list of local restaurants open for takeout and delivery, sorted by neighborhood, so feel free to choose one from there or hop on your favorite delivery app and see what's available today for lunch or dinner.

Safety tips: When ordering takeout or delivery, if you want to keep yourself as safe as possible from the coronavirus, toss out the takeout containers immediately, put food on plates, and wash your hands after touching the containers. Also, opt for contact-less delivery.

You can also support restaurants by buying gift cards and certificates for future meals — to help them make rent next month. A site launched this week from Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger called SaveOurFaves that will help you find local restaurants to support in this way.

"This is no longer about the survival of individual restaurants,” says Russ Bendel, CEO of The Habit Burger Grill, in a release about the virtual nationwide event. Together, we must act to support each other and our communities in unprecedented ways."

As part of the awareness campaign, people are being asked to tweet or post to Instagram about their takeout orders using the hashtag #TheGreatAmericanTakeout.

There's also a Twitter account for the event — which could have ongoing impacts — and you can follow that here.

Will you commit to eating at least one delivery/takeout meal on 3/24 to help save our nation’s struggling restaurants?

RT if you’re in! #TheGreatAmericanTakeout pic.twitter.com/K387ee0hUy
— #thegreatamericantakeout (@TheGATakeout) March 20, 2020

Where To Locally Source Your Super Bowl Party

Cooking is a pain in the ass, but you can't be hosting a Super Bowl party without some of the traditional artery-clogging, cholesterol-spiking, downhome American football snacks. Here now, our picks for where to order takeout so you can kick back with a cold Anchor Steam.

Wings from Wing Wings: The Lower Haight's Wing Wings is running a special Super Bowl menu this Sunday with buckets of 25 going for less than $1-per-wing. We like their Sriracha-tossed Angry Korean wings, but the traditional Buffalo-style are the obvious crowdpleaser. Add on some potato salad or mac & cheese because you are lazy and it's right there at the same store. Just don't be too harsh with chef-owner Christian, who hails from Baltimore.

Frito Pie from Chile Pies & Ice Cream: The unassuming, and delightful dessert shop has elevated a blessed New Mexican delicacy in that way only San Francisco could: swapping out canned chili and Velveeta for the homemade stuff with pico de gallo and fresh crema. Likewise, the Fritos come straight out of the bag the whole dish is served in, for that crinkly feel of authenticity. Do yourself a favor and have them cater a DIY Frito Pie bar.

Rosamunde Brats and Sausages: for tubesteaks of all kinds, the sausage grill's original Mission Street location allows you to order online and will deliver to most of the Mission for free, or elsewhere for a small fee. Go nuts with the beer sausage, bratwurst and the chicken habanero sausage smoked with tequila. (Why the hell not?) Bonus: You can appease your meatless friends with vegan kielbasa and they're also now available in Oakland.

Photo: Hopscotch

Duck Fat Chips and Double Down Wings from Hopscotch: East Bay residents who can't get to Wing Wings should look to three-star Hopscotch in Uptown Oakland. Chef Kyle Itani wil be slinging takeout orders of a dozen wings (just featured in GQ this month) or chips fried in duck fat with yuzu aioli for ten bucks apiece.

Crab Dip from your local seafood purveyor: Native San Franciscans love talking about crab. Chances are you are not a native San Franciscan, but were drafted here out of college like everyone else. Fake it by bringing some fresh dungeness crab dip to your Super Bowl party and discussing the inferiority of Baltimore's Chesapeake Bay blue crab. We know we said you wouldn't have to cook, but try this recipe with sourdough bread if you're not afraid of mayo and cream cheese. Or this one if you need to go full-bacon with everything you serve.

Chips at Taqueria Cancun. Photo: David Lytle

Nachos from pretty much anywhere: This town is flooded with taquerias. Choose your favorite — gringo-fied or not — and get, like, half a dozen orders of carne asada nachos. Just to be safe.
Photo: Yelper Wilhelm Y.
