(Some) affordable housing advocates and ethicists are shaking their heads over District 1 Supervisor Jake McGoldrick's poor party timing this week.

Remember that lot on Cesar Chavez and Mission that everyone's fighting about condoizing? Well, the Board of Supes had a contentious debate about it on Tuesday, and narrowly voted for development on a 6-5 vote. (hey, Michela Alioto-Pier must've shown up that day!) The swing vote? Jake McG, which surprised some people because usually Jake votes with the progressives (who were the losing 5).

Well, well, well: turns out that on Monday night, the day before the vote, McGoldrick went to a fundraising party thrown by Barbary Coast Consulting. Barbary Coast not only sponsors SF local politics go-to website Usual Suspects, but also runs one of the city's most successful lobbying/PR businesses. And who's just recently hired Barbary Coast? The developers of the condo project. That doesn't look so good.

Barbary Coast says that their party for McGoldrick had nothing to do with their lobbying work and that they were simply showing their support for the supe in his anti-recall efforts, and McGoldrick himself says that "my buttocks has never been for sale" (huh?) -- but the Mission Anti-Displacement Coalition is pretty steamed. Who'd want to buy McGoldrick's buttocks anyways?

For what it's worth, the developers have donated $2000 to McGoldrick, and McGoldrick raised about $8000 at Monday night's shindig (it's not clear if the $2000 was donated at the party, but we don't think it was.).

Time to head for the hills.

Mountain biking is a grass-roots sport that is only about one bake sale above your local group ride in terms of publicity and prestige, but it is an exciting sport that requires intense fitness, training, and dedication. At SFist, we understand the sport and the culture around it. We also understand what makes a good mountain bike race. To that end, we've reviewed the 2007 MTB racing season in order to provide our readers with a summary of this year's most interesting Northern California events.

So grab your bike, sharpen your elbows, and strap on a number plate for some challenging dirt action, or pack up the camp chairs, the cooler, and the kids, and head out to the races for a cheap day of fun and entertainment. Even if you aren't interested in competing, check out some of these events. You will see amazing feats of cycling prowess, discover the latest in space-age materials and designs, and probably pick up an armful of free posters, stickers, and other industry schwag.

Festivals

Sea Otter Classic, April 12 - 15, 2007-- The granddaddy of them all. The Sea Otter has everything: international cycling stars, a variety of cycling disciplines and events, games and activities for the kids, food, live entertainment, and lots and lots of industry vendors. If you've never been to the bike races before, this event should be your introduction.

Infineon Cougar Mountain Classic, July 6 - July 8, 2007 -- Sigh. This event has all the marketing, sponsors, and Cycling USA support necessary to be a huge cycling event. Unfortunately, it lacks the terrain and the trails to truly walk the walk. Until they move this event to Mt. Now that Netroots have slowed down on the Tauscher hating, they've moved onto another subject to which their ire is drawn, KSFO. One of the diarists on Daily Kos is telling the story of poor Spocko the Blogger. Spocko had a thing about KSFO for whatever reason and decided to record bits and pieces of various shows with the hopes of capturing of something truly appallingly in bad taste and full of invective. Our guess is that he probably spent a good ten minutes or so before he had enough damning evidence. With recorded bits and pieces of the shows. Spocko the Blogger turned some of the quotes into mp3s and sent them to various sponsors of KSFO shows as well as their corporate overlords. The obvious reason, of course, is to show those holding the purse strings just what they are spending money on.

So what did Spocko the Blogger get for his troubles? A cease-and-desist letter from Disney saying he's in violation of several copyright issues. You know the whole, taping and recording without the express written consent of Major League Baseball thing. The Man got Spocko down just enough to get his blog pulled by his ISP. KSFO even put up a picture of him on their web site, something we're sure was accompanied with all sorts of nice compliments.

But this, of course, is a viral age so Spocko the Blogger did what most half-way intelligent blogger would do-- send the mp3s out to into the internets and play a game of keep away from all those corporate entities. Which is where we pick up the story, having heard about his plight and listened to the mp3s on Daily Kos. There's even a YouTube clip, posted above, which plays the mp3s out too.

So the diarist, Mike Stark, is trying to create a "blogswarm" of bloggers out there to try and help Spocko out, the best way they know how. First is drawing attention to Spocko's plight in hopes it'll embarrass everyone involved. Second is to continue on Spocko's crusade and get people to stop advertising on KSFO. We don't listen to KSFO like ever so we had no idea that Match.com advertises on KSFO but it doesn't take any sense of imagination to realize that Match.com might not be the best advertiser on KSFO, although even wingnuts need dates now and then (it'll probably help them, actually). And there's bigger fish that's being fried too, that being Disney/ABC, which mysteriously owns KSFO and sees no problem with airing the stuff it airs despite the obvious fact it's not very Disney and they don't seem to be sponsoring KPFA. Spocko himself is asking people to donate money to various people that are helping him out, like Media Matters or the EFF

Handing in Guns to See the Guns

Chip Johnson in the Chron is reporting on a promotion in Oakland to get people to <a href="http://www.orovillemr.c...

SF News

African Americans

Chip Johnson

Chron

crime

gun

guns

hair

music

News+Sports

Oakland

people

sponsors

Jon

Now you can already see the problems with this, can't you? First up, GnR ain't really big in the hood. The second thing is that they're not that big with anyone anymore. Oh, and the other big thing is that Guns doesn't really have a great reputation with African Americans due to the infamous song "One in a Million." Not said but should have been said is that all of this is a band now lead by an eccentric overweight lead singer with hair extensions playing with a glorified band of hired guns to play music that's now about twenty (twenty!) years old. Or the irony in giving tickets to a band that has the name "guns" in it.

To prove his point, Johnson walked around the neighborhood where the promotion is being offered and asked if anyone was into the show and would hand in their guns. Pretty much nobody did. And pretty much everyone said it was a dumb idea.

The guy in charge, however, admits it's not a great match but essentially says it's better than not having the gun exchange. Which is a pretty good point. He also says he's looking for more corporate sponsors and that it's what he's stuck with.

Name That Bridge!

From the people who brought you AT&T Park and Monster Park and the Doritos’s Fiesta Bowl comes word that the Golden Gate Bridge-- THE Golden Gate Bridge-- <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...

SF News

advertising

Bud Light

District

Fiesta Bowl

Golden Gate

golden gate bridge

Monster

Monster Park

News+Sports

parks

people

sponsors

T Park

THE Golden Gate Bridge

the national

Jon

Okay, before we all start screaming and shouting, it's more for the Golden Gate District than it is for the bridge as the district is about $87 million in debt. And even they seem to be aware that they're about to commit mass sacrilege.

So far, possible ideas might mean signs at the beginning or end of the bridge or some other type of low-key advertising. The idea they say is to get sponsors that fit into what the Golden Gate Bridge represents. We're guessing that means we won't see the Bud Light Golden Gate Bridge or the Levitra Golden Gate Bridge of Fremont. We should also mention that they've only so far hired a consultant to look into it as opposed to put the sucker in bidding.

But still.

The type of program they're looking for has been used so far with National Parks, a plan called ""Proud Partners Program" which has raised over $100 million for the national parks. And we should say that as much as the idea stinks, that's over $100 million dollars that the parks wouldn't have without the sponsorships. Ok, so perhaps SFist's own Donor's Choose challenge isn't going to break any records (and we're not the best promoter's are we?).

But that doesn't mean there's a flaw in the system... well not a flaw in the Donor's Choose system anyway, don't even get us started on flaws in the public school system. So from now until September 30, Donor's Choose is trying to raise $250,000 for California school proposals and half of that is being donated by big money corporate sponsors. The rest would come from nice, education supporting, happy people like yourselves.

We look a look at some of the chosen proposals (the proposals are absolutely the best things about Donor's Choose) and have found that there is something for everyone:
This year is no different, with SFist's crack film fest team at the Roxie Film Center nearly every day of the fest's June 8-15 run. We're especially looking forward to Brett Leonard's disturbing , Mike Mendez's disturbing The Gravedancers, and Brian Avenet-Bradley's disturbing Dark Remains (sensing a theme, here?)

We're not just seeing movies: we're also psyched as hell to see The Primitive Screwheads' (our favorite local theatre company) new show The Chainsaw Massacres, as it plays HoleHead on June 14 (more on that show later).

But first we're hitting tonight's launch party at Annie's Social Club (they moved this spring to 511 Folsom at 5th), and you should, too! The party starts at 7 and runs until 11:30, and features bands, DJs, spooooky film shorts, and $3 beers. Entry is 10 bucks, with all proceeds going to SF IndieFest. We'll see you there, and all week at the fest.

Nathaniel Ford: Increase patronage!

EB: Well, yeah!

NF: Increase our patronage, and part of that is, speeding the system up. And that was in the SPUR Report, you know, how do we make it faster? Again, the Transit Effective is study, will achieve that and tell us what we need to do. However, that’s an 18-month process –

EB: And that study's being performed by an outside agency?

NF: Well, what we’ve done is hire an outside consultant to do that work for us. It’s a work between the Controller’s office and the MTA. We’re the two sponsors to get this work done. The challenge, though, you know, is to do it right, it takes around 18 months, and then after it’s over – well, during the 18 months you’re getting professional involvement, professional examination, we’re getting the community’s involvement, so when it’s done in 18 months, we’ll have a product that says what this system should look like to optimize it, but then you apply, I think, the political filter, the community filter on it, and we may need to make some adjustments, but we were doing the same thing in Atlanta.

The marathon began with San Francisco Film Society Executive Director Graham Leggat's welcoming remarks, then it was on to an excessively-entouraged (no CSI to his Plumpjack, alas) Gavin Newsom, who brought up the earthquake again (we're so over the earthquake) and described Paris, France as "the Paris of the East, I mean, the Paris of the West, uh, the real Paris" as he awarded the key to the City to the Mayor of Paris (whom our companion referred as "the mayor of France", much to the amusement of our entire row of seats).

In receiving the key, Bertrand Delanoë delivered a charming sppech that used the words "freedom" and "liberty" so many times that we were reminded of that episode of Friends where Joey gives his first draft of Monica and Chandler's wedding ceremony. But we shouldn't crack wise, because even if Delanoë's English vocabularity is limited, we have to wonder if Gavin has bothered to address Parisians in their native language at all.

Then it was Legatt's turn again, where he appropriately pimped all the sponsors of the Fest before introducing Perhaps Love's director, Peter Ho-Sun Chan, whose remarks were mercifully brief.
Perhaps Love

Nobody Expects the Spanish Inquisition

Remember how we said Bud wouldn't investigate Barry because it would serve absolutely no purpose? The fact that major league baseball sponsors are bailing left and right on any sort of Barry home run celebration could have something to do with it. Then there's the fact that Bud felt he had to do something-- anything-- to silence the pitchfork-wielding mob of sportswriters who are screaming for blood. Any blood. And gosh darnit, if the Skip Bayless and Jay Marriotti's of the sporting world want blood, they'll get blood.

What could possibly come out of this is anyone's guess because it's opening not just a can of worms, but a huge, industrial size can of worms, one just shipped in from Asia and laden with warning signs and skull and cross bone stickers everywhere. Since the investigation was spurred on by the Barry book, will it just be a book report? Will anyone be punished and if so, who and why only the who? After all, the only ones still around from the so-called Juice Gang are Messer’s Bonds, Giambi and Sheffield. Unless you investigate the whole era and go after people not named in the book.

Then what do you do once you discover purported wrong doings? And how thorough of an investigation will be allowed? If Bud wants to discover who is responsible all he has to do is look in the mirror. And Don Fehr's mirror. And anyone who thrilled to the explosion in home runs over the years. And finally, why now instead of when steroids were all over the place? Or when McGwire and Sosa were jacking them left and right? One doesn't have to think very far to get all Nat X about this. Seriously, if McGwire were standing on 708, would heads be demanded?

Somebody else wrote this, but we'll add to it. If Bud really wants to turn the page and get over all this, he and Don Fehr should just schedule a press conference, admit they screwed up, and accept responsibility. Which, of course, would never happen.
