But for the first time in two years, the Sisters are expected to bring their Easter Sunday shenanigans back to the Mission District park on April 17.

Easter in San Francisco is celebrated quite a bit differently than any other part of the country. Sure, there are traditional holiday tropes to partake in — there's never a shortage of midnight masses to attend; we're sure this year will also see groups of children search for Easter eggs in family-friendly events across the seven-by-seven — but the crowning jewel of SF's left-of-center Easter Sunday celebrations is the one hosted by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at Dolores Park, which pedestals heaps of queer frivolity.

The Sisters are back to their old habits! Aptly called the "Sister's Easter: Back to Old Habits!," the mid-April party will see the event celebrated in a true return to form that will also include an in-person Hunky Jesus contest. Though the Foxy Mary contest wasn't announced on the Facebook page, it was, however, included in a Tweet sharing the news that the Sister's would take over Dolores Park again this Easter Sunday.

"More information" will be announced soon, but rest assured it appears Dolores Park will again be alive with untraditional extravaganzas come April 17.

For a trip down memory lane, revisit our coverage of 2019's in-person Hunky Jesus contest.

Related: Hunky Jesus Contest Returns to Dolores Park for Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’s 40th Anniversary [2019]

This Year's Online Hunky Jesus and Foxy Mary Contests Helped Our Spirits Rise Again [2020]

Photo: "Baby Jesus" winning the Hunky Jesus contest in 2015.
Nearly 3,500 people were still hanging out at the park at 8 p.m. on Sunday when the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence first attempted to help clean up the post-Easter-celebration mess. So, about 30 of them returned at 9 a.m. yesterday to clean up the lingering litter.

Here are Sister Maple Syrup's observations regarding the attendees' littering patterns:

A smoker will make a tidy pile of their cig butts next to their blanket all day, then leave that pile on the ground when they leave the park.

There was an amazing array of bottle caps from beer. Who in their right mind rips cap off a bottle and tosses it into grass where people play soccer…?

A lot of people must believe that it’s okay to leave jello, lemon rinds, strawberries, and other assorted cocktail garnishes because they’re “biodegradeable” — giving no thought to how gross that might be to step in.

Surprisingly, only one dirty condom found, and 4 or so wrapped condoms. Glad those who had them took them with them!

+++

I know Dolores Park has these kinds of messes every weekend, and there’s no team like us to come along after to clean it up, so I empathize with those of you who live there. Please know that we (the Sisters) definitely DO care enough to clean things up, and Monday morning we managed to leave the park cleaner than it was when we showed up Sunday morning to pick up dog poop before our event :)

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will be celebrating their 30th anniversary with two big events this weekend.

Tomorrow night (Good Friday), there will be an opening party at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts for the "Under a Full Moon: 30 Years of Perpetual Indulgence" installation, in which the sisters will share their vast archives with the public. "The Sisters have been creating rituals, blessings, art, literature, and general debauchery designed to promulgate universal joy and expiate stigmatic guilt for the past 30 years." The event is free (donations welcome) and goes from 8 to 11:30 p.m. An RSVP is required (you have until Midnight tonight, do it quick!). The exhibit runs through June 28.

There is also currently an exhibit at the SF Public Main Library's James C. Hormel Gay & Lesbian Center displaying the Sisters' artifacts, records, press releases, photographs, habits, and other objects, which runs through May 7.

On Sunday, the Sisters will host an extra-Indulgent Easter at Dolores Park. In addition to their regular Easter activities, which are Children's Easter (11 a.m. to Noon), the Bonnet Contest (1 p.m.), and the ever-popular Hunky Jesus Contest (3:40 p.m.), there will be a big line-up of performers with very punny names from Noon to 2 p.m.

Then, the Rebirth Processional will immediately follow the Hunky Jesus Contest at 4 p.m., traveling from Dolores Park to the Castro and ending at Noe and Market Streets, where the AfterBirth Party will begin. There will be an Energy 92.7 stage with entertainment between Cafe Flore and Lookout. The party goes until 8 p.m.
