An electronic music festival that launched last year at Napa's Meritage Resort is returning in early October, and will expand from one to two days, with headliners Kygo and Zedd.

This will be a repeat appearance for tropical house favorite Kygo, who co-founded Palm Tree Crew and played the first edition of the Palm Tree Music Festival in 2025. Billed as an "intimate" festival for EDM lovers, the Palm Tree Music Festival is the signature event of Palm Tree Crew, who have also thrown these events at Art Basel, in Aspen, and the Hamptons.

The Palm Tree Music Festival, Napa edition, is happening Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3 at the Meritage Resort & Spa, and other acts will include a DJ set by Disclosure, and performances by Hugel, &friends, Swimming Paul, COCO & BREEZY, Frank Walker, Rules, AMPRS&ND, and JLITTLE.

Given the venue, this festival comes with VIP packages that include rooms and suites, some of which have balcony views of the festival grounds. And the event is being produced in partnership with Another Planet Entertainment and Blue Note Napa.

"This year is all about building on the momentum we saw in Napa and taking the experience to the next level," says Myles Shear, co-founder of Palm Tree Crew, in a release. “Expanding to two days allows us to bring in more world-class talent while giving guests the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the Palm Tree Crew lifestyle, from the music to the setting to the hospitality."

Napa has seen significant growth in its music events in recent years, with sell-out crowds descending on the annual BottleRock festival over Memorial Day Weekend, and the Blue Note Jazz Festival giving way to the Black Radio Experience festival, which also takes place at the Meritage Resort. Festival Napa Valley, which takes place in July at multiple venues, also brings dozens of classical and jazz music performances to the valley.

A Latin music festival that followed BottleRock last year, La Onda, was canceled this year with no explanation, however the political situation stemming from Trump's immigration crackdown was likely a major factor.

Two children, ages 5 and 7, had to be airlifted to UC Davis Tuesday after a crash involving a car in Angwin, in northern Napa County, and a third child also suffered injuries.

Three children, two aged 7 and one of them a 5-year-old boy, were riding electric motorbikes in Angwin Tuesday evening when all three reportedly crashed into the side of a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu. The crash happened around 6:15 pm, as Bay City News reports, on the 400 block of Newton Way.

According to the CHP, the 5-year-old was riding one of the motorbikes with a 7-year-old passenger, and the other 7-year-old was riding a second bike alongside them.

The 5-year-old and one of the 7-year-olds suffered injuries and were airlifted to UC Davis for treatment, with the younger child airlifted by helicopter with major injuries from the crash scene. One 7-year-old was transported to Angwin Airport and was airlifted from there to UC Davis with reportedly "minor injuries."

As KPIX reports, the third child was taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center by ground ambulance.

CHP is now investigating the crash, and per Bay City News, they have not said whether the children were wearing helmets.

CHP said that there were no stop signs at the intersection where the crash occurred, and impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Festival La Onda, which would have been in its third year at the Napa Valley Expo on the weekend following BottleRock, has been abruptly canceled with no explanation.

There will be no Festival La Onda this year in Napa, as organizers announced Tuesday that the fest was canceled. This comes just two weeks after they announced a lineup including J Balvin, Christian Nodal, Maná, Ivan Cornejo, and others.

A series of "Cancellation Questions" with answers have gone up on the festival website, but there is currently no answer to the question of why the festival is being called off.

"Unfortunately, the 2026 Festival La Onda will not be taking place," the website state. "All ticket buyers who purchased through Front Gate Tickets will receive a full refund in as little as 30 days. We remain hopeful that a future Festival La Onda will be possible. Until then, we are proud of what we created together and deeply grateful to the fans who supported La Onda."

They add, "We remain hopeful that Festival La Onda can return in the future."

As KTVU notes, fans are already speculating online about the reason for the cancellation, with some noting the high ticket price — $550 for two days — and others saying it could be linked heightened immigration enforcement. The latter could be a reason that artists might have wanted to back out of the festival as well.

The Trump administration, which was only just beginning to ramp up its immigration crackdown last May, had previously targeted the festival and revoked the visas of bands it said were glorifying cartel violence. Two of those groups, popular Mexican regional music band Grupo Firme, and another Mexican group La Receta, had to pull out of the festival at the last minute last year due to visa issues.

Festival La Onda had been scheduled for May 30 and 31, the weekend after Memorial Day, when BottleRock typically occupies the same festival grounds. Other acts on this year's lineup included Danny Ocean, Los Tucanes de Tijuana, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Paulo Londra, La Arrolladora, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, Grupo Niche, Molotov, Hermanos Espinoza, Orishas, and Chiquis.

La Onda brought in 70,000 attendees in 2025, in its second year after launching in 2024. The festival was part of a trend among festival promoters to capitalize on the infrastructure buildouts they do and reuse them for consecutive events, with Another Planet Entertainment doing something similar after Outside Lands the past two years. Coachella, in Southern California, also now occurs over two weekends, and is followed by the country music-focused Stagecoach Festival.

It is possible that anemic ticket sales since the lineup announcement were the primary reason for the cancelation. The festival appeals to a largely Latinx audience, many of whom, especially if they are undocumented, have been curtailing public activities like this over the last year. And as KTVU reported last year, some concertgoers speculated that attendnace was even down last year due to the ramping up of enforcement activity.

Rumors flew that ICE agents were going to be out in force at the Super Bowl this year, and there was likely concern about ICE targeting this festival as well.

Two young women were gunned down near downtown Napa in April 2024 after they allegedly brought a knife to a fight with another woman, and the legal proceedings against two suspects in the case were just paused.

We're getting a small update in the April 2024 double homicide that left 19-year-old Aileen Villasenor of Rohnert Park and 17-year-old Sasha Mufich of Napa both dead. As we learned at the time of the killings, three people were arrested for the double murder: John Nicholson Jr., then 22; Jessica Whitten, then 19; and Judith Adolph, then 19. Whitten and Adolph are both from Santa Rosa, and Nicholson is from Vallejo.

On April 13, 2024, the four young women were heard arguing on the 400 block of Riverside Drive, in the Napa Abajo neighborhood, which is across the Napa River and a few blocks south of the Napa Valley Expo. Investigators say that Villasenor and Mufich had come to the area with the three others, and Adolph allegedly planned to fight one of them.

As Bay Area News Group reports via Napa police, after the altercation began between Adolph and at least one of the other women, either Villasenor or Mufich pulled out a knife and stabbed Adolph. At that point, Nicholson reportedly put on a mask and chased the victims down the street, shooting both of them. He then allegedly hopped in a car with Whitten, who drove them away.

All three have remained in custody, and Adolph pleaded no contest in March to two counts of assault with a semiautomatic rifle and one count of being an accessory, in exchange for a lighter sentence, which she has not yet been given, and she reportedly agreed to testify for the prosecution.

But now, Adolph's credibility is being questioned by defense attorneys. And as Bay Area News Group reports, a judge in the case has paused the latest evidentiary hearing as lawyers review hundreds of hours of jail phone calls between Adolph and others. It's unclear what has been said in these phone calls, but it's clear that defense attorneys want to discredit Adolph, given that she would be a star witness for the prosecution.

We won't know until the hearing recommences in April what other evidence the prosecution may have, but we know that surveillance video from the area helped investigators to identify the suspects. Two other witnesses who appeared in court Monday were told to return in April, the news group notes.

It's unclear when Nicholson and Whitten will ultimately face trial.

Adolph faces up to nine years in prison for her part in the killings.

The nine-year-old Blue Note Napa just announced they’ll close after a final show on New Year’s Eve, but the club’s top brass are dropping some notes that they may intend to open a San Francisco venue instead.

There have been some pretty notable performances at the Blue Note Napa since it opened at the former Napa Valley Opera House in 2016, as the venue is an outpost of the original Blue Note Jazz House in New York’s Greenwich Village that opened in the early 1980s, and which just opened a Blue Note Los Angeles this year.

But the Chronicle reports that Blue Note Napa will close permanently, with their final show being a New Year’s Eve performance by jazz pianist Brian Culbertson. The Blue Note's operators nonetheless jazzed up the closure announcement by strongly indicating they are now considering opening a San Francisco venue.

“Blue Note Napa has always been about bringing people together through great music and shared experiences,” the club’s managing director Ken Tesler said in a statement. “Though our time at the Opera House is ending, this is far from the end — it’s an evolution.”

To San Francisco readers, Blue Note Napa was probably best known for their Labor Day Weekend Blue Note Jazz Festival that was originally hosted by controversy-courting comedian Dave Chappelle. That lasted until Chappelle complained of the host venue Charles Krug Winery that "I’ll never drink a cup of wine from this dusty ass field," all because they were trying to enforce a curfew. The festival rebranded as the Black Radio Experience and moved to Napa’s Meritage Hotel, where it continues to be held annually.

So while the club is closing, the annual festival is reportedly still going. And there may be more to Blue Note’s plans, as they’ve teased a possible new San Francisco venue.

“The Bay Area has such a rich musical heritage,” Blue Note Entertainment Group president Steven Bensusan said in the same statement. “We look forward to creating a space that reflects the energy and spirit of San Francisco while staying true to the intimacy and authenticity that define Blue Note.”

That is some vague wording there, as saying “a space that reflects the energy and spirit of San Francisco” is not necessarily committing to opening a San Francisco venue.

But if Blue Note is serious about this, we have some ideas for a venue they could use! The Blue Note Entertainment Group expressed some interest in the former Yoshi’s space in the Fillmore back in June 2023 when then-Mayor London Breed was soliciting requests for proposals (RFPs) for that space. That former Yoshi’s-turned-Fillmore Heritage Center space continues to sit empty to this day.

The 53-year-old Stockton man who was driving a minivan and was allegedly intoxicated when he crashed into a tree and killed six of his passengers apparently had three prior DUI convictions, and also did not have a valid driver’s license.

We’re learning more about Sunday’s alleged DUI crash in Napa that killed six people when the driver ran off the road and crashed into a tree on Pope Valley Road. Specifically, KTVU is now reporting that the 53-year-old driver, Norberto Celerino of Stockton, had three previous DUI convictions, and also did not have a valid driver’s license, and for whatever reason, also had three different aliases.  

Celerino had a previous DUI conviction in San Joaquin County in 2020, and then a second in the same county as recently as 2024. The third DUI conviction does not have date or location information attached to it, because the conviction is more than ten years old.  

Authorities in Napa County announced Monday that they had arrested Celerino on suspicion of murder, which suggested that this would be a case of what's known as "Watson murder" in California — a second-degree murder charge for a DUI death when a suspect has prior DUI convictions.

There were eight men in the minivan, including Celerino, and KTVU confirms they were all farm workers. Two have been identified as 42-year-old Loreto Ricardo Hernandez and 34-year-old Fernando Silverio.

The other six victims have not yet been identified, as police are still notifying next of kin. KTVU reports that the Napa County Sheriff's Office says that all eight men in the vehicle were likely from the Stockton area. The one other survivor of the crash remains hospitalized.

On Tuesday, Celerino was formally charged with six counts of murder, six counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and DUI.

Murder charges have now been filed against the 31-year-old Napa woman whose two children died in a solo vehicle crash in March in which she was allegedly driving under the influence.

The horrific crash happened on the morning of March 16, a Sunday, around 7:20 am. Yesica Barajas, 31, was driving her 2006 Nissan sedan on Highway 29 and crashed into a tree at the Imola Avenue off-ramp in Napa.

Both Barajas's children, a 9-year-old girl named Aalliyah and a 10-year-old boy named Damien, were in the backseat and died in the crash.

Authorities said Barajas had been speeding, and was "under the influence of substances" at the time of the crash, and arriving officers said they smelled marijuana at the scene and saw multiple cannabis vape cartridges in the crashed vehicle.

Barajas also reportedly had bloodshot, watery eyes. A Breathalyzer test done 90 minutes after the crash showed she had a blood alcohol level around 0.027%, which is below the legal limit of 0.08%.

She was charged with two felony counts of vehicular manslaughter, one felony count of driving under the influence of alcohol and a drug causing injury, and two felony counts of child abuse.

Now, as the Chronicle reports, the Napa County District Attorney has upgraded the manslaughter charges to second-degree murder. This follows a hearing at which Barajas appeared on Tuesday. The exact reason for the upgrade in charges was not given.

She has been held in custody since the crash, as the Napa Valley Register notes, on $1.5 million bail.

There is some legal drama happening in the local restaurant world, with the widow and children of late celebrity chef Michael Chiarello filing suit against three investors in Chiarello's restaurant group who they say wrested control of his businesses "in a hostile takeover" after the chef's death.

The lawsuit, filed this week in Napa County, was brought by the estate of chef Michael Chiarello, who passed away at age 61 in October 2023 of a reported allergic reation that resulted in anaphylactic shock. Chiarello made his name at the now defunct Tra Vigne restaurant in St. Helena, before becoming a TV personality on PBS and the Food Network. (He competed on Top Chef Masters in 2009, coming in second to Rick Bayless.)

In the Bay Area, at the time of his death he had his flagship Italian restaurant Bottega in Yountville, companion restaurant Ottimo, also in Yountville, along with Spanish restaurant Coqueta on the Embarcadero in San Francisco.

His estate, the trustee of which is his surviving spouse and business partner Eileen Gordon, contends in the suit that investors Rich Frank, John Hanson, and Peter Crowley wrongfully took control of Gruppo Chiarello, the late chef's restaurant group, after his death.* And the lawsuit arrives just a month after the Press Democrat published a story in which Frank and Hanson announced their full ownership of Bottega.

Per the lawsuit, Frank and the other defendants, "immediately and maliciously embarked on a campaign of coercion, fraud, and interference to try to trick, intimidate, and pressure Chef Chiarello’s Estate to surrender to Defendants’ efforts to wrest control of the valuable assets rightfully belonging to Chef Chiarello’s Estate."

The suit further alleges that, "within days" of Chiarello's death, the investors "began a sustained war on the Estate" in order to seize the restaurant assets and prevent Chiarello's four children from inheriting them. The investors, according to the suit, then "falsely and fraudulently" claimed they had purchase options for the restaurants, and have, since then, given themselves "sizable cash distributions" from the restaurants. There is also an allegation of recently discovered "financial improprieties" that have "diminished the value of the Estate."

"Michael honored his family heritage, and we created our family trust 15 years ago to hold the business assets so they would be passed down to the next generation, not sold off in the event of his death," Gordon in a press statement. "Given the devastating circumstances, I expected cooperation from these investors, especially considering that over the years Michael had treated them like family."

Gordon's statement adds, "The people he trusted took everything for themselves, depriving all other shareholders including Chef Chiarello’s children. I cannot allow their unjust and malicious acts or their attempt to profit from Chef Chiarello’s legacy go unpunished and look to the court for justice."

Frank, a former president of Disney Studios, is the owner of Frank Family Vineyards in Calistoga. And the lawsuit further contends that Frank and the other defendants cut ties with Chiarello's own family winery, and directed the restaurant to sell Frank Family wines instead.

Bottega, which opened in 2008, has been led by executive chef Alex Espinoza since Chiarello's death.

Speaking to the Press Democrat last month, Frank said, "We are excited to work alongside chef Alex and the talented team at Bottega, many of whom have been with us since the beginning."

It seems that Frank and Hansen believe that their ownership of the restaurants was settled with an arbitration that took place in 2024, in which Crowley did not take part — which the new lawsuit contends was part of a "war of litigation with the intent to overwhelm, outspend, and exhaust" the Chiarello family.

The defendants have not yet offered public comment on the suit.

Police in Napa have made an arrest in an apparent domestic violence homicide that occurred Sunday, leaving one woman dead.

The female victim, who has not yet been publicly identified, was found inside a home on the 4300 block of Dale Drive in Napa around 10:30 am Sunday. The circumstances and cause of death have also not been made public, and police cited "investigative purposes" for not releasing the woman's name.

On Monday night, NBC Bay Area reported that police had identified a suspect, who they did not believe was in Napa anymore, and a hunt was on for his whereabouts.

The homicide was being linked, in online rumors, to possible ICE activity occurring in Napa, which local authorities denied.

The suspect was located Monday night in Fairfield, as the Napa Valley Register reports. Police scanner activity indicated that officers descended on a residence in the vicinity of Nightingale Drive and Nightingale Court in Fairfield, and made contact with the suspect, 40-year-old Ernie Victor Solis.

Solis was taken into custody without incident and booked into Napa County Jail at 12:29 am Tuesday.

Solis was arrested on suspicion of murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and domestic violence resulting in injury.

Anyone with information about the case is being asked to contact Detective Tyler Olson at the Napa Police Department, at Tolson@cityofnapa.org.

Police clarified to the public that the homicide and this arrest were unrelated to a different criminal investigation that had been going on earlier on Sunday, and which involved the sheriff’s office as well as sheriff’s and police SWAT teams. That SWAT activity had no link to any ICE activity that has been ongoing in the Bay Area, and which has been the subject of protests in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and elsewhere.

Justin Timberlake, Green Day, Noah Kahan, and Benson Boone all top the lineup at this weekend's music festival for wine lovers — and celebrity chefs Bobby Flay, Kristin Kish, and Antoni Porowski will all be on the Culinary Stage.

The Music
The 12th annual edition of BottleRock Napa Valley kicks off Friday at noon, and the lineup — which is typically aimed at a slightly older and more mature demographic than Outside Lands or Coachella — includes heavy hitters like Justin Timberlake and Bay Area legends Green Day (who actually just played at Coachella). This is Timberlake's last US stop on the world tour that he began over a year ago, before he heads to the final leg in Europe.

Green Day headlines Friday, May 23, and Friday's lineup also includes Public Enemy, Sublime, Sofi Tukker, Kaskade, Remi Wolf, and E-40 — who'll be playing on the VIP Village stage.

JT headlines Saturday, along with Grammy nominee for Best New Artist Benson Boone, Ice Cube, 4 Non Blondes, and actress turned pop singer Kate Hudson.

Then, on Sunday, the big draw may be Noah Kahan, but Drama, Cage the Elephant, and Flo Rida will certainly bring in fans as well.

Single-day and three-day general admission tickets are still available, but VIP is sold out.

The Food, Drink, and Chefs
BottleRock has an even bigger and splashier culinary stage than Outside Lands, which is emceed by Bay Area TV personality Liam Mayclem, and a bunch of Food Network and other food world celebs will be making appearances and doing demos alongside musical guests. The headliners there are Bobby Flay (on Sunday); one of Flay's "Titans" on the Food Network, Brooke Williamson (Saturday), alongside Kate Hudson; Top Chef co-host and previous Top Chef winner Kristin Kish (Saturday), who'll be cooking alongside Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers; Queer Eye's Antoni Porowski (Sunday); and country star/food show host Trisha Yearwood, who'll be doing something Friday at 5:15 pm alongside the great Serena Williams.

As always, plenty of Napa (and Sonoma) wine will be poured, from the likes of Silverado Vineyards, Cuvaison, Beaulieu, Schramsberg, Duckhorn, Kosta Brown, and more. There will also be cocktail stations from Hendrick's Gin, Don Julio Tequila, 21 Seeds tequila, Tito's Vodka, High West, and Aperol.

And food-wise, you can expect an array of fairly fancy stuff, including caviar-topped lobster corndogs from Press and their new museum cafe Under-Study in St. Helena (see video below), sushi from Morimoto Napa, pizza from both Napa's Oenotri and SF's A16 and Pizzeria Delfina, barbecue from Stateline Road Smokehouse, and loaded fries from Meadowood chef Christopher Kostow's Loveski Deli.

Getting Into BottleRock and Setting Up Your Spot
By all accounts, you should be trying to arrive early any day you're planning to attend BottleRock, as this is a festival that most people drive to, and parking will be a challenge unless you've purchased a parking pass (many of these are already sold out).

Street parking in downtown Napa is generally free, but lots of folks will be on the hunt.

The box office, for picking up will-call wristbands and such, is located at 3rd and Bailey streets, and it will open at 10:30 am Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It's also open noon to 7 pm on Thursday, if you're in Napa early.

Bring an empty water bottle, as there will be stations for filling them.

A mother who was arrested and charged with DUI and vehicular manslaughter last week made her first court appearance Monday after being released from the hospital in Napa County.

31-year-old Yesica Barajas made her first appearance before a judge this morning, as ABC 7 reports, following the tragic March 16 crash that killed her two children 10-year-old Damien and 9-year-old Aalliyah. Barajas is expected to enter a plea on Tuesday, and she was remanded to jail with bail set at $1.5 million.

As the Press Democrat reported after obtaining the criminal complaint against Barajas, she allegedly consumed marijuana and "multiple alcoholic beverages" prior to the high-speed crash — however Breathalyzer tests done 90 minutes after the crash showed a blood alcohol level around 0.027%, which is well below the legal limit of 0.08%.

The Napa County District Attorney’s Office charged Barajas last week with two counts each of gross vehicular manslaughter and child abuse, as well as an additional count of DUI causing injury.

Barajas was at the wheel of her 2006 Nissan Maxima the Sunday before last around 7:20 am with her two children in the backseat, allegedly speeding on Highway 29 in Napa. She reportedly tried to take the West Imola Avenue exit and ended up veering off the offramp and crashing into a tree.

An arriving officer on the scene reported smelling marijuana on Barajas and said she had red, watery eyes. The officer also reported finding suspected cannabis cartridges and a vape pen in the car.

Barajas was hospitalized after the crash with lacerations to her face, and a severe injury to one knee. It's not clear if the children were seat-belted.

She was released to jail over the weekend.

A GoFundMe for funeral expenses for the children has raised over $50,000.
