Haskell and his wife had four adopted children, all of whom have since been removed from the home.

The most troubling allegations involve the eldest daughter, who was 11 years old at the time of the alleged crimes. She was 11 and 12 years old at the time, and also described that once, as punishment, the parents took away her clothes and made her wear a garbage bag.

On Monday of this week, the East Bay Times reported that jurors heard a phone call police had secretly wiretapped, in which another Mormon church congregant confronted Haskell with the allegations. “She said you touched her private parts underneath her underwear,” the caller told Haskell.

The Times reports that Haskell could be heard “stammering and breathing in exasperation” upon being confronted. And as the conversation goes on, Haskell does seemingly admit guilt, saying “Tell her I’m sorry,” and “If she gives us another chance, we’re all about supporting.” He also added, “I was wrong. I will do better.”

Haskell’s trial continues Monday, though he’s currently out of custody on $240,000 bail.

Related: Richmond Pastor Arrested on Charges of Sex Crimes Allegedly Against Underage Church Members [SFist]

Image: Superior Court of Solano

Utah Ilk & LDS Church Spent More on Prop. 8 than Previously Known

Briefly touched upon last week when the final batch of Prop 8 donor names unfurled, Utah citizens and the LDS Church spent...

SF News

califiornia

constitution

court

discrimination

donors

gay marriage

LDS

mormon

prop 8

same sex

Utah

Brock Keeling

Briefly touched upon last week when the final batch of Prop 8 donor names unfurled, Utah citizens and the LDS Church spent more on getting Prop. 8 passed than previously known. According to the Salt Lake Tribune:

Utahans and the LDS Church spent significantly more than previously reported on last-minute efforts to push passage of California's ban of same-sex marriage, newly filed financial disclosures show.

Donations from as many as 1,025 individual and businesses in Utah to both sides of the Proposition 8 campaign totaled about $3.8 million, according to new filings with California's secretary of state, with more than 70 percent going to groups supporting the successful measure.

This is unnerving. And, most disconcerting, not at all surprising.

The California State Supreme court will begin hearing arguments on Prop 8 starting March 5. Be sure to watch it all go down at 9am on the California Channel.

Reaching out to latino, black, and religious communities

Providing legal support -- to block prop 8, or to protect gay couples, or to promote other equality-themed legislation

Organizing lists of volunteers/voters who are passionate about the cause

While rumors of photoshopping swirled, CBS 5 managed to figure out that, yes, the sign was, in fact, real.

The sign went up at 606 Sanchez Street, made with strips of pink sheets of paper. The building's owner, Michael Thomas, admits to putting up the banner, but won't say why, exactly, he took it down.

CBS 5 interviewed Thomas, discussing such points as the Central Valley; disenfranchising Mormon culprits; SFist; and you, dear commenters.

CBS 5: "You've been following the discussion on SFist. While some comments support you, others are saying, 'this isn't going to help.'"

MT: "There are all kinds of assimilationists that are of the opinion that if we're only nicer, then maybe the Mormons and hate groups will come around. That ain't the way it works. Somebody needs to call these guys for what they are doing.
I'm angry at their meddling in our affairs. It's particularly ironic about the Mormons doing this, given their past. Polygamy and all that good stuff. Then, they sit there and lay down the gauntlet. Now that they're big and they feel entitled to persecute a group that's weaker."

While one might argue that gay marriage is also a form a assimilation, whatever that is, that's splitting hairs at this point. We thank Thomas for giving us much to discuss, not to mention figure out, in this most difficult time.

Update: Said banner was taken down because it was "made of paper and falling apart after the storm." The people pushing Prop 8 have their heads so far up their asses they've turned into mobius strips.

This is what you're fighting when you fight Prop 8: a video that connects gay marriage with Hitler. Wait, WHAT? Oh, it's a joke! You know! Funny! HA! HA! But as commenters observe, you can't mention Hitler and homos in the same breath without remembering what ACTUALLY happened in World War Two: fifty thousand gays imprisoned, with estimates of around 10,000 gays killed in concentration camps. HA! HA! HA!

We do adore offensive humor when it works, because it is so impressive an accomplishment. Jokes about dictators are a tempting challenge because the author must attain a level of humor sufficient to overcome the audience's horror. For example, the over-the-top relationship between Satan and Saddam on South Park is initially shocking, but we breathe a sigh of happy relief when it becomes outlandish -- just as we do during the gleeful "Springtime for Hitler." But for satire to be permitted to land its blow, it must be both devastatingly funny and devastatingly true. It must accomplish, as Henri Bergson said, a "temporary anesthesia of the heart."

This video, on the other hand, fails to land a single joke, fails to ring true, and so fails to numb its pain. The video is not only guilty of being unfunny, as are most of these Hitler re-dubs; it specifically evokes the inescapable real-life persecution and murder of thousands of gays in the Holocaust. By reminding us of Hitler's extermination campaign, it invites an elephant into the room and then abandons it. And the elephant is so massive, so horrifying, that it defies comprehension.

It is the cruelest of memories that could possibly have been evoked in this campaign. And it is beyond shameful. It is evil.

We certainly don't want to join this video in issuing a surrender via Godwin. But by evoking Hitler's murder of thousands of gays -- a genocide motivated by religious convictions -- it is impossible not to observe which side of this argument is more vulnerable to unflattering historical comparison. We would not stoop to insinuate such a comparison ourselves; it is a comparison that, through their actions, has simply insinuated itself.
