A 65-year-old woman was walking in a crosswalk at the intersection when the bicyclist allegedly sped through, hitting the woman and knocking her to the ground.

The victim reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital.

The suspect fled the scene but was ultimately arrested. San Francisco police have not released any further information about how they located the bicyclist — but presumably at that hour of the day there were many witnesses to the collision.

Any witnesses who may not yet have come forward are asked to do by calling the SFPD tip line at 415-575-4444, or sending a tip by text message to TIP411 with SFPD at the start of the message.

While some cyclists can behave recklessly on city streets, collisions like this are relatively rare — and more often cyclists are the victims in hit-and-run collisions with vehicles.

This case calls to mind one from a decade ago, in which a cyclist speeding down Castro Street from 16th toward Market plowed through a busy crosswalk, striking and killing a 71-year-old man. The cyclist in that case, Chris Bucchere, ultimately struck a plea deal, pleading guilty to felony vehicular manslaughter but getting off with three years probation and community service.

Photo: Google Street View

East Bay Bike Party Marred By Alleged Multiple Instances of Car-Dooring, Two Injured

A half-dozen or more separate incidents of cars allegeldy dooring bicyclists took place in the lead-up to and the wake of Friday’s East Bay Bike party, and the bicyclists say 14 of them were targeted, and at least two suffered serious injuries.

SF News

Oakland

emeryville

rockridge

berkeley

bicyclists

cycling accident

cyclists

Joe Kukura

A half-dozen or more separate incidents of cars allegedly "dooring" bicyclists took place in the lead-up to and the wake of Friday’s East Bay Bike party, and the bicyclists say 14 of them were targeted and at least two suffered serious injuries.

The East Bay has its own version of the Critical Mass bike ride, a second Friday of every month event called East Bay Bike Party. But KTVU reports this past Friday’s East Bay Bike Party saw several “dooring” attacks, where motorists intentionally swung their doors open at bicyclists riding to the right of them. There's video of one of these attacks, and there were allegedly other dooring attacks this weekend on Thursday and Saturday as well, spanning Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, and Rockridge.

According to KTVU, "At least 14 [bicyclists] were targeted and eight actually hit. In two separate incidents, the suspects would swerve directly into the bicyclist as opposed to using their side doors."

The victims suffered varying degrees of injury, and least two people were seriously injured and had to be taken to the hospital.

At this time it appears that at least two different vehicles were used in these attacks, which occurred several hours apart in different locations....
— East Bay Bike Party (@ebbikeparty) February 12, 2023

The video below shows what the cyclists describe as one of these attacks, which allegedly took place just before 5:30 Friday night in Berkeley. There is a visible face of someone in the vehicle and license plate number visible on the vehicle. Though according to an Instagram post from East Bay Bike Party, “At least two different vehicles were used in these attacks.”

There’s also a different description of a vehicle in KTVU’s report, from an incident on Colby Street near Rockridge, and KTVU notes in that attack, “The suspected car is described as a gray Hyundai Elantra Sedan bearing a California license plate 8EDX27.” It’s unclear if there’s a motive in any of these attacks.

At least two bicyclists were injured seriously enough to be hospitalized, one of them named Ellie Mead, and KTVU has photos of the damage to Mead’s head. That station described the incident as happening “Saturday around 8 p.m. on Shafter Avenue and Forest Street.”

"I have eight stitches and this big gash in my forehead," Mead told KTVU. "There was this gray sedan. A passenger on the passenger side opened the door and slowed down the car. My bike rammed right into it. I fell to the ground. They drove away. As they drove away they were laughing."

We can say so much about the emotions going through our hearts right now but our largest concern are the victims. KTVU reports that “The day before on Thursday, a light blue SUV driving southbound on King Street between Alcatraz Avenue and 63rd Street hit another bicyclist, Watson Ladd, around 5:30 in Berkeley.” The station also adds that late Friday night, “ a blue hatchback attacked multiple people riding bikes on Grand Avenue between Park View Terrace and Lenox Avenue and hit at least three riders.” Describing yet another incident, KTVU says that “On Saturday afternoon, EB Bike Party said a driver with at least one passenger of a Kia Soul attacked a man in Southwest Berkeley.”

East Bay Bike Party reps tells KTVU that "they believe the actions are being done with three separate and possibly stolen cars." They pointed to the cars being described as Hyundais or Kias, which are commonly stolen — and the occupants of the cars clearly were not concerned with causing damage to the cars.

East Bay Bike Party says in a statement that “Make no mistake — these were violent, targeted attacks with cars used as literal weapons. Last night was another frightening reminder that local governments must take immediate action to make the streets safe for everyone.”

They add, “If you are a witness or victim of any similar attacks please DM us or email ebbikeparty@gmail.com and contact the police.” We’re linking contact information for the Berkeley Police Department, Emeryville Police Department, and Oakland Police Department.

Related: 77-Year-Old Woman Intentionally Hit by Car in East Bay Church Parking Lot, Authorities Say [SFist]

Screenshot: dal211 via Youtube

Bottom of the Hill Owner Launches Petition to Oppose Protected Bike Lane Quick-Build Project on 17th Street

A proposal by the SFMTA to do a bike lane "quick-build" project to create a protected lane for cyclists coming down 17th Street between the Mission and Dogpatch/Mission Bay has raised the hackles of the owners of music venues Bottom of the Hill and Thee Parkside.

SF News

cyclists

bicyclists

vision zero

Bottom of the Hill

bike lanes

bicycle safety

Jay Barmann

A proposal by the SFMTA to do a bike lane "quick-build" project to create a protected lane for cyclists coming down 17th Street between the Mission and Dogpatch/Mission Bay has raised the hackles of the owners of music venues Bottom of the Hill and Thee Parkside.

"Hey bike safety and bike lanes are wonderful, but this very specific one bike lane could destroy our venue. And, she suggests, that bands arriving with vans or trucks at the venue will have to "load in through protected bike lanes, which we feel will be more dangerous, and not safer, for bicycle riders."

Also, the petition adds, "This neighborhood is a place to bike to not just through."

"No one opposes bicycle safety," Schwarz writes. "On the contrary, many signers are bicycle riders. The problem is that the plans do not address the real-world concerns shared by the stakeholders. Alternatives should be debated, and concerns considered."

Hey bike safety and bike lanes are wonderful, but this very specific one bike lane could destroy our venue. "The problem is, once the plans are created and approved by the SFMTA, it could be too late to oppose because of the nature of the Vision Zero Quick-Builds."

The petition also points out that there are already double bike lanes — one on each side, uphill and downhill — on 17th Street (see image above), but cycling advocates argue they are unsafe and too frequently blocked.

Streetsblog is already proposing that cyclists boycott Bottom of the Hill based on the petition. "To point out the obvious, if Schwarz is for safe bike lanes, just not in front of her venue, then she’s not for safe bike lanes."

Streetsblog also quotes a neighbor of the venue who's a cycling advocate, Cliff Barger, who sent in a photo of a car blocking the bike lane outside Bottom of the Hill. "The amount of blocked bike lane on 17th – it’s a big deterrent from cycling." Barger says.

It's not clear what the alternative would be for bands loading in and out of a music venue — maybe its an area where the bike lane barricades end and there's a delivery-only area to pull into that doesn't block the bike lane.

But in any event, expect this fight to potentially get louder in the coming months.

Photo: Google Street View

City Installs Raised Dots On Dolores Street Following 'Hill Bomb' Death

Instead of one there were three Dolores Street Hill Bomb events over the past week and a half, and during the third one on Friday, a cyclist collided with skateboarder sending both of them to the hospital — and the cyclist died from his injuries on Sunday.

SF News

skateboarders

skateboarding

Dolores Street

cyclists

Jay Barmann

Instead of one there were three Dolores Street Hill Bomb events over the past week and a half, and during the third one on Friday, a cyclist collided with skateboarder sending both of them to the hospital — and the cyclist died from his injuries on Sunday.

The first and what we thought was the official Dolores Hill Bomb happened a week ago Thursday, on July 9, leading to at least one hospitalization and several injuries — and the vandalism of a vehicle that unknowingly drove into the chaos during the event on Dolores between 21st and 19th streets. But as the Examiner reports, different dates were promoted for the event this year, leading to confusion and multiple Hill Bombs — including a "Part 2" on Saturday, July 11.

As one local skater and friend of the deceased cyclist, Daniel Mejia, tells the Ex, the third Hill Bomb felt sparsely attended and "The energy and the overall vibe of it was very odd. Even before it started, it felt like it shouldn’t have happened."

The cyclist, Andrew Sanders, was a recent graduate of San Francisco State University, graduating with a BA in visual art. He leaves behind a group of friends, some of whom gathered for a small vigil on Dolores Street on Sunday. Sofia Montes, a coworker of Sanders, tells KPIX he was "Super creative, always dancing, super happy. Such a nice guy to be around."

And Sanders' roommate of five years, Jonathan Concool, tells the Examiner, "Anyone and everyone he met, he could always find something to connect with them. He’s the most full-of-life person I’ve ever met."

<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned="" data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/CATUpFipK3y/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="12" style=" background:#FFF;
The incident happened on Point Reyes-Petaluma Road just west of Hicks Valley Road just before noon Saturday, as ABC 7 reports, and the cyclists say that a dark blue Dodge Ram swerved into them intentionally.

All four were injured but one of the cyclists had to be flown to a hospital with severe injuries.

CHP officers say they were sent "numerous tips" that led them to a home in Novato where an arrest was made, and the photo above was posted, around midnight last night.

The Marin Independent Journal reports that the cyclists were participating in the Jensie Gran Fondo of Marin, a cycling event that benefits the Marin Bicycle Coalition.

The Marin CHP writes, "We are grateful to serve a community that looks out for one another. Often times in situations like this people think they see something but often dismiss it as an unlikely coincidence. When we ask for help we are asking you to disregard that feeling and let us know. Sometimes it's the smallest detail that leads us to a suspect."

SF Cyclist Killed In Rush Hour Collision

The driver remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police say.

SF News

bikes

collision

cyclists

fatality

safety

sfpd

traffic

vision zero

Eve Batey

A cyclist was killed Tuesday, after police say he was struck by a driver at a busy San Francisco intersection.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, a male cyclist in his 40s was riding through the intersection of Alemany Boulevard and Silver Avenue at 5:34 p.m.Tuesday when the incident occurred.

The report from police states only that a "vehicle on Alemany had a collision with a bicyclist."

The cyclist was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where police say that he succumbed to his injuries. A spokesperson with the San Francisco Medical Examiner's office confirmed that the deceased had not been publicly identified as of Wednesday morning.

The driver remained at the scene, police say, and cooperated with the investigation. As of publication time, additional details on the crash were not available, nor was any information on possible citations or charges faced by the driver.

SFMTA Approves Parking-Protected Bike Lanes For Upper Market

Good news for cyclists who have to deal with the daily hazards of biking all the way up and down Market Street from downtown to the Castro.

SF News

bike lanes

cyclists

octavia

Octavia Boulevard

sfmta

Jay Barmann

Good news for cyclists who have to deal with the daily hazards of biking all the way up and down Market Street from downtown to the Castro: The SFMTA Board has approved the creation of parking-protected bike lanes along the side of Upper Market Street between Octavia and Duboce. This is all part of the ongoing Upper Market Street Safety Project, and as the Bay City Beacon reports, this newly approved piece of the project will create protected bike-only lanes on both parts of this often treacherous stretch of Market.

According to a planning document previously circulated by the SFMTA, the plan is to create the lanes temporarily, with paint only, starting this summer, and the Beacon says the finished lanes will be cordoned off by the end of the year. Further changes to the median and sidewalk bulb-outs on this two-and-a-half-block stretch will take place through 2019.

The intersection of Octavia and Market in particular, where the 101 freeway lets out onto Octavia Boulevard, is considered one of the most dangerous urban intersections in the country, and further improvements by the SFMTA hope to make it less so.

Part of the intersection already has a protected bike lane on the downtown-bound side, as seen in the photo above.

As Shayna Yasuhara writes on the Bay City Beacon, the cordoned off bike lanes will hopefully guard against double-parking by rideshare drivers, too. "While cycling, I was hit by an illegally parked Uber on the lower part of Market Street," she writes. "When I tried to pass his stopped car that was in the bike lane, the driver saw a police car approaching his illegally parked vehicle and, to avoid the potential ticket, quickly turned into my path. They ended up with me on top of his car, plus a ticket."

300 letters of support were sent to the SFMTA about the protected bike lanes, according to the Beacon, and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition pushed for them as well. These lanes will be similar to protected bike lanes that already exist on other portions of Market Street closer to downtown.

Still to come are permanent safety improvements on Market a few blocks up toward the Castro — in particular the notoriously, crazily chaotic six-way intersection of Market, Noe, and 16th Street, which in addition to dealing with bicycle, pedestrian, and vehicle traffic in six directions, is also a turn-off point for the F-Market.

A Latvian cyclist named Toms Skujins suffered a pretty serious crash while speeding down a curvy hill in Stage 2 of the AMGEN Tour Of California race yesterday. As CBS 5 reports, along with the chopper footage above, Skujins wiped out on Quimby Road just below Mount Hamilton, and sustained a broken collarbone and a concussion in the process. But, as you can see, he gets up and goes to get back on his bike, even standing, dazed, a little too close to the race course as another group of cyclists go speeding past.

Skujins was racing for Cannondale-Drapac, and he did in fact race a bit further before officials decided to pull him off his bike.

A photo at the end of the video shows him in the hospital looking pretty banged up.

The course of Stage 2 started in Modesto and summited Mount Hamilton before finishing in San Jose, and it was won Monday by Poland’s Rafal Majka in 3 hours 43 minutes and 46 seconds.

Stage 3, which runs south to north from Pismo Beach to Morro Bay, happens today. The race then heads inland to Big Bear Lake and finishes Saturday in Pasadena.

There’s been significant gnashing of teeth and grinding of gears in San Francisco over the controversial, so-called “Idaho stop” — the practice of bicycles yielding instead of hard stopping at intersections with stop signs. Here locally in San Francisco, the Board of Supervisors originally approved rolling stops for bicycles in September 2015, was quickly vetoed by Mayor Lee, and did not have the votes to override Lee’s veto.

But now that veteran of those Idaho stop debates Scott Wiener has moved on up to the California state legislature, he’s taken the fight for Idaho stops statewide. Rebranding the practice with a new (and perhaps sushi-inspired?) name “California roll,” Wiener serves as the principal co-author of a pro-Idaho stop bill introduced by San Francisco assemblyman Phil Ting and southern California assemblyman Jay Obernolte

It’s called AB 1103, and it’s still just in the committee phase. Assembly Bill 1103 proposes to “authorize a person operating a bicycle approaching a stop sign, after slowing to a reasonable speed and yielding the right-of-way, to cautiously make a turn or proceed through the intersection without stopping, unless safety considerations require otherwise.” Naturally, the bill is opposed by the California Police Chiefs Association, and also AAA.

Former SF Bay Guardian editor Steven T. Jones chimes in on Human Streets the Idaho stop/California roll “can benefit motorists by making intersections more efficient and predictable and encouraging cyclists to use stop-sign-strewn side streets and avoid congested arterials.”

Advocates for changing the stop sign laws for bicyclists pretty routinely point to a 2010 UC Berkeley study called Bicycle Safety and Choice: Compounded Public Cobenefits of the Idaho Law Relaxing Stop Requirements for Cycling. “Intersections are the most dangerous zone for cyclists, whose safety benefits from the freedom to choose the safest time to clear, and to do so more quickly,” writes author Jason Meggs. “Bicyclists enjoy vastly superior abilities to perceive and execute a safe yield at a stop than other modes, and great incentive to do so safely. Exposure to harmful pollutants which accrue at intersections is also reduced.”

Again, this bill is still just in an Assembly Transportation Committee. It is not before a full state assembly vote, it is not on the governor’s desk, and it may not even make it of committee. But the Assembly Transportation Committee will be debate AB1103 at 2:30 p.m. today, with an audio livestream available online.

A recent news report on an injured cyclist denied passage on the N Judah because she was carrying her (unfolded) bike received no small amount of attention this week, and now transit advocates are asking why bikes are unequivocally banned from Muni light rail vehicles at all.

As reported this Thursday by the Ex, cyclist Katherine Roberts "hit a metal plate that jutted open by the Muni tracks at Church and Duboce streets" at around 11:30 p.m. on April 11, and struck her head. Fearing the high cost of a San Francisco ambulance ride, she and fellow-rider Jym Dyer attempted to board an N Judah that had stopped nearby, bikes in tow.

Per the Ex:

She sported a black eye and a massive head bump, which she showed to the operator. She asked if he could give her and Dyer a ride to nearby UC San Francisco Parnassus.

“He said, ‘Not with your bikes, I can’t,’” Roberts recalled.

Roberts and Dyer argued with the operator and an inspector. The inspector denied them a ride to the hospital four stops away, but later allowed Roberts to board the next train.

Streetsblog SF reports that

They both had folding bikes, which are permitted on Muni as long as they are folded. But the train was empty, and given her injuries and the crack on the head, it didn’t occur to her to fold her bike. “As soon as I showed the driver my injuries, I thought he would just say ‘okay’ and drive the train,” said Roberts. “I was disoriented and weak and I wasn’t really thinking ‘oh, it’s really important for me to fold the bike right now!'”

The driver told them to get off the train and refused to move. He called over a fare inspector. The inspector forced them off the train and told them to call an ambulance if they needed help. But for some reason he also told them they could take the next train, which was right behind them (that’s three N-Judah’s bunched in a row, in case anyone’s counting). However, he still wouldn’t let Dyer on with his bike, folded or not, because it is a larger, folding cargo bike model. Dyer had to ride his bike behind the train while Roberts-with cuts and a large bump growing on her head-was left alone with her now-folded bike.

According to Streetsblog, the driver also "came out of the cab to yell at Roberts to 'secure her bike' which had flopped over on the floor. 'I was weak. I had a concussion,' she said. 'The car was almost empty. I wasn’t blocking anybody.'"

Speaking with the Ex, SFMTA spokesperson Erica Kato is apologetic, to a point.

“I agree that our staff on scene should have exercised more compassion to Ms. Roberts and engaged with her in a more courteous way...However, our protocol when it comes to medical emergencies is to call Central Control, which will then dispatch emergency services.”

The incident has inspired Streetsblog to wonder "why are we banning bikes on late-night trains in the first place!" Noting that bikes are allowed on BART, the website says that "Nobody’s arguing that full-sized bikes should be allowed during peak periods. But what would be the big deal if bikes were allowed, space permitting, during off hours?"

"If New York can handle bikes on its subway, and Portland, Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento and many other cities can handle bikes on their Light Rail Vehicles, what makes Muni so special?"

Rachel Hyden, the Executive Director of the San Francisco Transit Riders, appears to agree. Her organization, which successfully pressured the SFMTA to allow all-door boarding in 2012, says “the incident with Katherine is disheartening, both in terms of how she was treated and in light of the strict enforcement of an antiquated policy, especially in an emergency situation."

The SFTRU, she says.“is supportive of a policy amendment that would allow bikes on LRVs, especially during off-peak hours.”

As Hyden is the SFTRU's first executive director, and was hired just weeks ago, this seems like an ideal issue with which she can make her bones. I'd expect this discussion to continue until Muni either offers a legal reason they can't allow bikes on their vehicles or folds to the SFTRU's demands. This will be an interesting one to watch!

A pedestrian was left with life-threatening injuries Tuesday, after he was struck by a cyclist as he crossed the street.

Police say the collision occurred at 8:30 Tuesday night, at the intersection of Third Street and Palou Avenue in the city's Bayview District.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the pedestrian, a 55-year-old man, "jumped off a Muni platform and ran across the street." The cyclist, a 36-year-old man, "collided with [the pedestrian], causing life threatening injury to [the pedestrian]."

The pedestrian was transported to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Police say that the cyclist, who was also injured, was treated at the scene and released.

Citing the ongoing investigation into the collision, police did not provide details on which party had the traffic signal at the time of the crash. They did confirm, however, that no one was arrested at the scene, nor have either of the men been cited.

'Idaho Stop' Could Become Legal For Cyclists Statewide Under New Assembly Bill

Bicycle advocates have long been pushing for the legalization of the so-called "Idaho stop," and a previous effort in SF was vetoed by the mayor.

SF News

bicyclists

California

cyclists

idaho stop

State Assembly

Jay Barmann

Bicycle advocates have long been pushing for the legalization of the so-called "Idaho stop" — or "California roll" — in which cyclists treat stop signs more as yield signs, only coming to a full stop if conditions are busy or hazardous. A new bill being put before the California Assembly would make such rolling stops legal statewide, but this is sure to re-spark a years-long debate in which motorists say cyclists shouldn't be allowed to pick and choose which traffic laws to follow on our already chaotic city streets.

The Examiner reports that Assemblymen Jay Obernolte (R-Hesperia, and an avid cyclist) and Phil Ting (D-San Francisco) introduced the bill on Friday, and the language leaves it up to cyclists' discretion whether conditions in an intersection are safe enough to pedal through, though stopping at red lights would still be mandatory.

Obernolte tells the paper that coming to awkward stops and spending more time in an intersection is actually more dangerous for cyclists. "It’s pretty compelling that the data supports this kind of change in the law,” he says. “Their loss of momentum causes them to spend a substantially longer amount of time in the intersection."

The practice was named for the only state where this is now settled law, Idaho, and a previous effort to push through a similar measure locally by the Board of Supervisors was vetoed last year by Mayor Ed Lee. At the time Lee said he refused to "trade safety for convenience," and that "while expedient for some bicyclists, [the Idaho stop] directly endangers pedestrians and other cyclists."

But Obernolte points to the fact that such stop-sign laws for cyclists are very unevenly enforced, and that rolling through stop signs remains common practice nearly everywhere because of the above-mentioned momentum issue.

Back in 2008, the city commissioned a study of the stop-as-yield practice, but no legislation came out of that effort. Since then, several municipalities in Colorado have passed stop-as-yield ordinances.

A study out of UC Berkeley comparing traffic incidents in Boise, Idaho to both Sacramento and Bakersfield suggests that cycling is far safer in Boise, where the Idaho stop law has been on the books since 1982.

Previously the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has railed against the city for failing to focus on the five types of motorist violations that cause traffic deaths, and "Instead, [the SFPD is] ordering officers to spend hundreds of hours cracking down on people biking cautiously and slowly through stop signs."

KRON 4's Stanley Roberts brings his shame camera to SF's Market Street this week to document just how many people on bicycles roll right through red lights in a given hour, sometimes doing so obliviously with an SFPD cruiser right next to them.

Stanley catches many people disregarding red lights, or coming to a stop and then rolling through the light ahead of car traffic because they think they can, though he does manage to document a few obedient souls who, perhaps because there was a cop there, politely wait with their bikes at red lights and don't roll through crosswalks full of pedestrians.

And, naturally, there's the requisite, "Why are you filming me?" guy, shamefaced, because that is Stanley's bread and butter.

Here's that guy getting stopped by a cop, who ticketed him.

The San Francisco Police Department has finally figured out what's causing an increase in cyclist and pedestrian fatalities in SF and beyond: The increase in bike-riding and walking.

No, seriously, that's what they said in a press release sent to media yesterday, writing "Bicycle and pedestrian fatalities are rising in California as more people use these non-motorized means of transportation." They then cite a statistic from over three years ago, saying that in 2013 701 pedestrians and 141 bicyclists were killed in California roads, "accounting for more than 28 percent of all traffic fatalities."

That's why, police say, they've been targeting and ticketing pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers during the special enforcement periods of January 4th, 6th, 9th, 12th, 20th, 23rd and 31st.

According to the SFPD, "the department has mapped locations over the past 3 years where pedestrian and bike collisions have occurred along with the violations that led to those crashes." It's unclear from the release if those areas are the ones that "extra officers" will patrol, devoting "special attention...toward drivers speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs and signals, failing to yield to pedestrians in cross walks or any other dangerous violation."

But it's not enough to watch for drivers, as in news sure to warm the hearts of cyclists fond of the Idaho stop, police also say that "Bike riders will be stopped and citations issued when they fail to follow the same traffic laws that apply to motorists" on those enforcement days.

"All riders are reminded to always wear a helmet," the SFPD writes, though helmet use is not actually required by California law for those over the age of 18. (Look, I'm not saying you shouldn't wear a helmet, just want you to know your rights.)

SFPD is also targeting pedestrians in the operation, saying that they will "cite for violations when pedestrians cross the street illegally or fail to yield to drivers who have the right of way." Pedestrians are reminded that they "should cross the street only in marked crosswalks or at corners." (Unless marked otherwise, corners are actually considered crosswalks in the state of California, but who's counting?)

Despite this concern from police regarding jay walking, the three pedestrian collisions SFPD have divulged to media so far this year involved people walking in a crosswalk: A hit-and-run Monday at Bush and Laguna Streets, a man who was run over when he fell in a crosswalk last week, and a woman police confirm was "in the crosswalk" at Union and Buchanan streets Wednesday when she was struck and killed by the driver of a pick-up truck. In the two cases where drivers remained at the scene, police say that neither were arrested in the collisions. Information on if either were cited was unavailable as of publication time.
