Or else someone in the department just thought it would be clever to have an arresting officer dress in a Santa suit to make this arrest last week, because the crime involved the theft of Christmas trees and wreaths from a local Safeway store.

The video, posted to Facebook, is set to the soundtrack of "You're a Mean One, Mister Grinch," even though it doesn't seem like the suspects in the case really deprived anyone of their Christmas. They just, allegedly, tried to steal $2,400 worth of Xmas decorations from a grocery chain that they were probably intending to resell somewhere to make some quick cash.

The suspects, according to the ACPD, were identified as 39-year-old Joshua Gonzales and 29-year-old Kayla Daniels, both of Vallejo.

According to investigators, Safeway produced surveillance video showing the suspects pulling up a pickup truck to the store on the night of November 27 and loading it up with 24 small Christmas trees and two crates of wreaths. After the crime was reported on December 1, American Canyon police served a search warrant at the couple's home in Vallejo on December 4 and arrested them both on suspicion of grand theft and conspiracy.

And it appears that Gonzales, whose face is not shown in the video, became the unwitting supporting player in the department's video about the arrest.

The two dozen trees, and the wreaths, were all reportedly returned to the Safeway in American Canyon.

Man Attacks Person Inside Novato Mosque After Crashing Car Into Building

Novato police arrested 33-year-old David Slattery Friday morning after he crashed his car into the Islamic Center of North Marin and allegedly attacked someone inside the mosque.

SF News

islam

novato

attacks

assault

arrests

Leanne Maxwell

Novato police arrested 33-year-old David Slattery Friday morning after he crashed his car into the Islamic Center of North Marin and allegedly attacked someone inside the mosque.

As KTVU reports, an officer was patrolling the area when he heard a crash on the 7000 block of Redwood Boulevard around 11:30 am Friday and ran to investigate, according to a press release from the department.

As the Chronicle reports, the officer witnessed the driver entering the mosque after he crashed a car into the exterior of the building. His case, disclosed 6 weeks later, raises concerns over sedative use and police response to psychiatric emergencies.

According to Bay Area News Group, Nathan Hoang, a 41-year-old Marine Corps veteran and father of six from Hayward, died in police custody in March, nine days after a paramedic injected him with midazolam—a controversial sedative linked to several in-custody deaths across the country. The incident, which remained unreported by police for six weeks, began when Hoang—suffering from a mental health episode possibly exacerbated by methamphetamine use—mistakenly broke into a home on Virginia Street, believing his children were in danger. Officers responded, tased and handcuffed him, and placed him on a gurney, after which the paramedic administered the sedative. Minutes later, Hoang became unresponsive and was declared brain dead.

Hoang, who served two combat tours in Iraq and suffered from PTSD, had long struggled with mental health issues. His ex-wife, Cynthia Fernandez, emphasized that Hoang was a devoted father and a kind-hearted person who experienced psychotic episodes where he believed his family was in danger. She believes he was in one of those episodes the morning of his arrest, searching for his children.

The use of midazolam by first responders has drawn scrutiny in recent years. An Associated Press investigation found at least 94 deaths linked to the sedative between 2012 and 2021, 16 of which occurred in California. Another San Francisco resident, 30-year-old Christopher Harris, was also arrested for creating a disturbance while under the influence of alcohol on a train near Lake Merritt Station. Harris also apparently attempted to bite an officer while he was being detained.

A 31-year-old Oakland resident, Antianelle Bigsby, also reportedly caused a disturbance for other passengers Thursday night on a train near Lake Merritt Station, and was found to have two concealed fixed-blade knives upon being detained.

Four other people were arrested and found to have open outstanding warrants. Union City resident 28-year-old Matthew Hendry was booked for fare evasion at MacArthur Station, and Eureka resident 35-year-old Charles Lemmon was found with drug paraphernalia at Ashby Station. South San Francisco resident 32-year-old Oscar Rostran was also found with drug paraphernalia on a train near Fruitvale Station, and a search revealed he also was in possession of fentanyl. 41-year-old Lawrence Spragan was arrested during a welfare check at MacArthur Station.

Image via BART Police.

Massive Anti-Human Trafficking Bust in East Bay Leads to Arrest of 13 People, Identification of 30 Survivors

California has one of the largest concentrations of human trafficking survivors in the United States, and Contra Costa county is no exception.

Contra Costa

human trafficking

arrests

Holly Secon

Thirteen individuals were arrested in a massive anti-human trafficking operation in Contra Costa County undertaken in late January, the Chronicle reported.

The Contra Costa Human Trafficking Task Force, which was founded in 2018, as well as several other East Bay law enforcement agency partners, carried out eight separate busts between January 23 and January 28. The victim left the area and called police, and described the suspect as "potentially a mentally disturbed person." The victim added that the suspect, identified as Nuru, "pulled the knife on him for no apparent reason."

Update 2: KQED's Joe Fitzgerald Rodriguez posted to Twitter and sheriff's department records now confirm that as of 4:44 p.m. Nuru was booked in county jail for second degree robbery.

This is the first report of Nuru being in the public sphere in many months, nearly a year and a half after he and a co-conspirator were indicted on federal corruption charges in January 2020. Since then, the federal probe has ensnared multiple city employees and city contractors, with some pleading guilty to fraud and bribery and agreeing to cooperate with federal prosecutors.

Most recently, just last week, two Oakland businessmen, Alan Varela and William Gilmartin III, agreed to plead guilty, admitting to conspiracy to commit wire fraud for providing Nuru with $20,000 in meals and a $40,000 tractor to use at his vacation ranch in Colusa County. These gifts were in exchange for inside information in their bid to build an asphalt recycling plant in San Francisco.

The probe has led to the resignations of multiple city department heads, including Nuru, former Public Utilities Commission General Manager Harlan Kelly, and his wife, former City Administrator Naomi Kelly.

The case against Nuru remains under investigation, and the breadth of the charges against him is still pending. He will likely face trial and/or prison time, though he is currently free on bail.

A year ago, the first man indicted alongside Nuru, SF restaurateur Nick Bovis, pleaded guilty, and he faces up to 20 years in jail and a $250,000 fine for each count to which he pleaded.

Related: Feds Charge Second Recology Executive For Bribery as City Controller Calls to End Their Monopoly

More Police But Fewer Arrests At San Francisco's Pride Celebration

Arrests, at least on Pink Saturday, were actually down from last year.

SF News

arrests

blm

crime

lgbtq

pride

security

sfpd

Eve Batey

In the wake of the Orlando attacks, SF Pride organizers arranged for security screenings at the event's entry points and a San Francisco Police Department presence significant enough that multiple groups pulled out of the event, saying that they were "more afraid of police than terrorists." It will probably be a great relief to those groups that thus far, no reports have been made of violence at the hands of police officers — and arrests, at least on Pink Saturday, were actually down from last year.

According to San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Sargeant Michael Andraychak, the preliminary arrest numbers for Saturday in "the areas encompassing Tenderloin, Northern and Mission Commands" (aka the places most Pride action is happening) are as follows:

Medical Calls Reported to SFPD: 5

Public Intoxication: 11

Misdemeanor Arrests: 5 including: 3 misdemeanor arrest warrants and 2 assaults

Felony Arrests: 3 including: 2 felony warrant arrests and 1 case of criminal threats

Sobering Center Patients: 12

According to last year's Saturday numbers, there were about 39 arrests, 20 medical calls, and 13 sobering center patients on the first day of Pride, alone.

Of course, there are numerous factors at play in addition to the metal detectors and cop presence: For example, the traditional Pink Saturday street party was replaced by a much smaller event at The Eagle; attendees weren't allowed to bring alcohol into the Civic Center event; and drones, which we all know are the root of all evil, were banned from flight over the celebration.

The heightened security was apparently viewed as a positive by attendees who spoke with local news outlets — one told ABC 7 "I feel pretty safe, I think that it needs to be implemented and I think it's a good idea," as CBS 5 reported that "The enhanced security didn’t mar the party atmosphere Sunday as the parade with men in glittery white wings walked on stilts and women in leather pants rode motorcycles in downtown San Francisco."

Assuming Sunday's numbers are similarly solid (they won't be released until this afternoon, Andraychak says), we can likely expect this level of security to continue in future — much to the mixed emotions of local politicians like Supervisor Scott Wiener, who told ABC 7 that "I don't like the fact that there are metal detectors going into Civic Center Plaza, but I'm not going to second guess the pride committee's decision to try to keep people safe."

After all, as SFPD spokesperson Officer Grace Gatpandan told KRON 4, “We’re not going to back down from more police, or more presence in these events."

"We’re here to keep people safe, and we’re going to do so in every way possible."

Nearly everyone had a great time at Outside Lands, right? Especially this guy. But some folks had a little too much fun (or tried to) and the numerous San Francisco Police Department officers patrolling "on foot, mountain bicycles, motorcycle dirt bikes, Harley Davidson traffic motorcycles and mounted horse back" (in the words of SFPD Sergeant Michael Andraychak) nabbed them. Here are the law and order stats at Outside Lands, by the numbers.

Though San Francisco Police Department Chief Greg Suhr told the Chron that Sunday's Pride celebration and parade was "off the hook," he didn't mean that in an law-breaking way — the event that he described as “without a doubt, the largest Pride celebration ever" was without major incident.

Arrest statistics for Sunday's event reflect that relative lawfulness. (Perhaps the presence of aspiring horror movie villian "Sweepy" kept folks in line?)

According to SFPD spokesperson Officer Carlos Manfredi, all the Pride-related police activity happened downtown, in the area of the parade and the Civic Center celebration. You already saw Saturday's stats, now here are Sunday's police activities by the numbers:

9: The number of people arrested for felonies.

4: The number of people arrested for misdemeanors

11: The number of people arrested for public drunkenness

2: The number of handguns seized

90-100: The number of medical calls made from the scene of the event

According to San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Officer Carlos Manfredi, Saturday was a busy day for police officers watching over the throngs of folks celebrating Pride. In addition to last night's shooting, Manfredi says that there were a lot of arrests both at the Civic Center event as well as at and following Dyke March in the Mission.

If the SF Giants win tonight, there will be much cause for rejoicing. After all, this will be their third National League pennant, and their next stop will be the World Series. Hooray! But San Francisco has a not-so-great track record when it comes to sports success celebrations — and the San Francisco Police Department says they're ready for any unpleasantness caused by a few bad apples.

Though the majority of the city's horrible sports-related rioting came after the Giants' 2010 and 2012 World Series wins, SFPD Chief Greg Suhr isn't taking any chances this evening. According to KCBS, all SFPD officers have canceled their days off and are ready to make sure any impromptu street celebrations of a pennant win stay safe and legal.

Police have certainly been on alert in the area around AT&T Park throughout the playoffs, conducting "crime suppression" patrols, breaking up a fight at 9:53 last night, and arresting three other drunk people shortly thereafter, SFPD spokesperson Sergeant Monica MacDonald says.

But Suhr isn't taking any chances with San Franciscans who might get a little too happy tonight (if we win! No jinxies!), saying “Certainly nobody wants to wake up tomorrow morning, just because they celebrated the Giants game, in jail with a case pending...Let’s act like we’ve been there before, because we have been.”

NCLS Game 5 begins at 5:07 tonight at AT&T Park. If we are victorious, then World Series games are scheduled at AT&T on Friday, October 24, Saturday, October 25, and, if necessary, Sunday, October 26, according to the SFMTA.

140 Gate Crashers, 1000 Pounds Of Cheese: Outside Lands By The Numbers

Food, arrests, and attendance: some fun numbers from Outside Lands.

Arts & Entertainment

arrests

Cheeselands

outside lands

sfpd

wise sons

Eve Batey
