Week Ahead: Bay Area Concerts

by Moses Namkung

Outside Lands has arrived. Remember last year? Substantial Muni fail, Radiohead's sound cutting out, Mr. Clothezoff, and other freshman-year festival growing pains... this year, we have a gaggle of headliners and acts that hit their prime a generation ago, but also an array of potentially promising Outside Lands night shows the entire week, including The Dodos (sold out, unfortunately), Holy Fuck and Os Mutantes. And that's on top of a week that's already front-loaded with Ted Leo at BOTH and Pete Yorn at the Fillmore on Monday and SubPop's Fruit Bats at Ameoba SF and the Independent on Tuesday. We've been analyzing the schedule, trying to figure out which day of the festival we are the most (and least) excited for. For some reason though, while we do so, we're finding ourselves drifting off and daydreaming of the Flaming Lips, Girl Talk and Grizzly Bear...

San Francisco just approved a contract that will permit future yacht rockers to entertain the masses at Golden Gate Park. That is to say, we've got three more years of the Outside Lands Festival. And it's a good thing for the city. According to KCBS, "[l]ast year, 130,000 people packed Golden Gate Park and the city made $815,000 dollars. The new contract guarantees the city a minimum of $950,000 dollars and allows Another Planet to stage a concert each summer for three years, with an additional two-year option following that." Old-time crooners like Pearl Jam, this indie rock band, the Beastie Boys, that indie rock band, the Dave Matthews Band, that group Fergie is in are some of the groups scheduled to perform for this year’s concert in the park.

Outside Lands Lineup Announced Today

Holy 1993, folks! The Outside Lands Festival lineup was announced today! The main headliners at the annual three-day concert in Golden Gate Park are:

We all had a great time piling on Muni last weekend, foaming and ranting about service to and from the park. But what was going on behind the scenes? We asked Muni how they strategized their service around Outside Lands. Here's what they had to say:

Boo! After we posted about "Oliver Clothezoff, visiting from New York" at the Outside Lands festival, the Chronicle went and edited it to read, "A visitor from New York..." (Pft, you guys are no fun.) But Brittney Gilbert has the original if you want to check it out.

MattyMatt and y'all have got the commentary down. Here's some pictures we snapped this weekend at Outside Lands. If you've got more, feel free to add your flickr links below. Man, this town has some good looking people.
