If you took a Waymo anywhere on Wednesday, you were likely treated to a little April Fool's prank. Isn't it cute when the robots try to have fun with us?

It was probably mostly groan-inducing, but perhaps delightful to some. Waymo's vehicles were programmed to do a prank-ish thing on April Fool's Day — a gambit that the company also tried last year.

This time around, some riders getting into the cars were told by the robot voice that it needed to "calibrate" its microphones, and asked them to "hum at a normal volume for five seconds." Then it said, "Just kidding! Happy April Fool's Day!"

Last year's April Fool's joke had the voice saying, "I'm gonna have to stop for gas." But the timing on this one feels like it could have been a bit more drawn out, for the sake of humor. Instead, there was a bad-dum-tish drum sting and the voice said, "Just kidding," almost right away.

Thoughts on robots having a laugh with the humans they're serving?
