Authorities released the names of the suspect and victim — who both attended SFSU at the same time — in Tuesday’s fatal shooting in SF’s Sunset District, and authorities are investigating whether or not the gun was intentionally discharged.
The victim in the shooting was identified as Samantha Emge, 22, who died after being taken to the hospital, as Bay City News reports. The shooting happened around 10:45 pm on the 2200 block of 22nd Avenue, between Rivera and Santiago streets. Based on preliminary evidence, investigators believe it may have been accidental.
The San Francisco Police Department announced in a press release Thursday that Nation Wood, 25, of San Francisco, was arrested Wednesday morning and booked into the San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, according to KPIX. Wood was detained Tuesday at the scene as soon as officers first responded to the shooting.
According to Emge and Wood’s LinkedIn pages, they attended San Francisco State University at the same time. Emge’s page says she attended the school for four years, graduating in May 2025, and worked as an interior design and architecture consultant. Wood’s LinkedIn profile says he works as a security advisor and attended SFSU through July 2025.
“I’m deeply saddened by this tragic incident in our community,” District 4 Supervisor Alan Wong, who represents the Sunset District, said in a statement. “My thoughts are with the victim and her loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Any loss of life in our community is devastating, regardless of the circumstances.”
This was one of two homicides that occurred nearly simultaneously in two parts of the city Tuesday night. In the other, a male victim was fatally shot in the Ingleside District.
