Starting this week, SFO is giving Uber a new revenue stream via passengers arriving at the airport. After relegating most rideshares to the upper deck of the short-term parking garage back in June, the airport is starting a pilot program with Uber ahead of the holiday travel season to allow riders to pay extra to get picked up at the curb.

The program allows users who select Uber Comfort, Uber XL, or Uber Select rides to get picked up at the curb, along with Uber Black and SUV cars and Lyft Lux Black and Lyft Lux XL, which already had the privilege.* SFO spokesperson Doug Yakel tells KPIX that it's just a two-month program, but the airport will extend it beyond January if all goes well.

"We’ve done such a good job that it really gives us a chance to study this, to see if it’s something our roadways can accommodate during the busiest time of the year," Yakel says.

For arrivals at Terminal 1, Uber premium customers can find their rides at Door 9; for Terminal 2 it's Doors 5 and 6; and for Terminal 3 it's Doors 12 and 13. If you're arriving to the International Terminal, you can still catch your rides (Lyft or Uber) at the center island on the departures level.

Meanwhile, all Uber X, Uber Pool, and Lyft rides for Terminals 1, 2 and 3 will continue to do the pickups at the designated areas on top of the garage — which, honestly, is just a couple escalator rides and a footbridge away.

*This post has been corrected to show that Lyft Lux vehicles still have curbside privileges at SFO.
