An allegedly violent shoplifting team was taken into custody Sunday, after a showdown at one of San Francisco's most troubled Safeway grocery stores.
According to the San Francisco Police Department, officers were called to a business on the 800 block of La Playa Street at 3:15 p.m. Sunday on reports of a disturbance.
There's only one business on that block — the Safeway grocery store, located at 850 La Playa Street, also known as one of the city's "Sketchiest Safeways," and adjacent to a violent mugging this past August.
This time, the issue was inside the establishment, police say, as two 32-year-old men "stole merchandise from store." When the suspects were confronted by a 24-year-old male store security guard, they hit him with a chain, leaving him injured.
Officers with the SFPD were already on the way, however, and arrested the crime team on the spot. The guard was determined to have suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening, and is expected to recover.
