On Saturday, July 1, Muni fares paid in cash or on Clipper cards went up 25 cents, with cash fares now costing $2.75 — something that likely led to a lot of awkward moments boarding busses over the weekend. The cost of a regular adult fare on a Clipper card or on the MuniMobile app is now $2.50, up from $2.25.

KRON 4 reports via Muni officials that the fare increases are ultimately going to make your Muni rides "faster and more reliable."

Even though cash fares are technically more expensive, that isn't exactly the case if you plan on taking multiple trips and you happen to get a generous bus driver who gives you an all-day transfer, or one with a few extra hours on it. Clipper card fares only allow for a strict 90-minute window for transfers — and the same will be true of the new magnetic strip transfer tickets that are beginning to get rolled out on some buses, but are not yet systemwide.
