One of several food halls that sprang up around the city in the last several years, The Hall on Market Street between 6th and 7th, has announced that its official closing will happen the last week of September, as Inside Scoop reports. That month will mark The Hall's three-year anniversary, and while the place was always meant to be a temporary space-filler ahead of a planned residential development, there remains a possibility that the developer will relocate it elsewhere in the city.
SFist was there for The Hall's opening day in 2014, and from the beginning the idea was to energize the block and provide a community gathering space during the years-long planning process that was inevitable for Tidewater Capital's 186-unit project at 1028 Market Street. That process ended up taking a year longer than anticipated, and in that time The Hall has become a popular lunch and happy hour destination for the many workers in the neighborhood. Vendors including The Whole Beast, which has been serving its excellent lamb gyros from the beginning, and newer additions like Chez Bobo, have been big hits with office workers and Market Street theater-goers alike.
And when The Hall moved in, the space which early in the last decade had been home to Hollywood Billiards and the L.A. Gals strip joint had sat vacant for about eight years on a strip of Market Street that has been depressed for decades.
Says Craig Young, managing partner of Tidewater, speaking to Inside Scoop, "The Hall has served its purpose. It really outperformed our expectations."
Tidewater's project will be joined on the block by the even larger 1066 Market Street, which will contain 304 apartment units. And just down the block, 950 Market Street is set to have 242 condo units and a 232-room hotel. All three projects are set to begin construction this year.
