TUESDAY, MARCH 7
ELIZABETH BISHOP BIOGRAPHY READING: Fans of the late, great American poet Elizabeth Bishop may want to drop by Book Passage at the Ferry Building this evening for a reading and signing with Megan Marshall, a former student of Bishop's who's written a new biography of her. Marshall won a Pulitzer Prize in 2014 for her biography of Margaret Fuller, and the new book blends elements of her own story with Bishop's, and track's Bishops life, her friendships with fellow poets Marianne Moore and Robert Lowell, and her later-life romance with Brazilian modernist designer Lota de Macedo Soares. SOULFUL FOLK SHOW: The trio known as The Wood Brothers have a new album out called Paradise, recorded at Easy Eye Studio in Nashville, and Live Nation calls it "a beautiful collection, the band’s most sophisticated work to date and also their most rocking." They're appearing tonight at The Fillmore with opening act The Shook Twins, and fans of folk should be all over this. The Fillmore, 1805 Geary at Fillmore, 8 p.m., $27.50
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8
FAUX QUEEN PERFORMANCE ART: Dancer, choreographer, drag performer and performance artist Fauxnique (a.k.a. Monique Jenkinson) brings her one-woman show "The F Word" to the Presentation Theater at USF this week, presented by the Davies Forum in partnership with the Global Women's Forum. As she puts it, "Fauxnique made herstory as the first cissexual female to win a major drag pageant," (i.e. the Miss Trannyshack Pageant), and this show presents her "fashionably fierce form of feminism from the painted mouth of a lady drag queen." 2350 Turk Blvd., 7 p.m., free
CHEESE TASTING CLASS: The Cheese School of San Francisco (in the space that was once home to Saison in the Mission) is doing a class all about award-winning cheeses from Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and elsewhere on the East Coast, should you want to expand your Cali-centric palates. The class is led by author and cheese authority Janet Fletcher, and the class includes two glass of wine, though you can also bring your own for a $25 corkage, and there's more wine for purchase. 2124 Folsom Street near 17th, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., $79
THURSDAY, MARCH 9
BRAIN/BODY NIGHTLIFE EVENT: This week's adults-only NightLife event at the Academy of Sciences is the first in a series of four events happening throughout the year exploring the relationship between the brain and the physical body. This week's features several yoga classes, including one down by the coral reef in the aquarium, as well as a talk about research into using immune system to fight cancer, and a talk about the human mind's role in fighting climate change. CRAFT BEER & STANDUP COMEDY: At the new Ales Unlimited: Beer Basement (in the space formerly known as The Basement and the club 222 Hyde) they're doing a weekly comedy series on Fridays and Saturdays called The Setup. The show is hosted by Richard Sarvate and Abhay Nadkarni, and this week's edition features Jesse Hett (Attractive Camp), David Naimyar (Rooster T Feathers Comedy Club), Emily Catalano (SF Sketchfest), Casey Ley (Punch Line San Francisco), and Robbie Goodwin (Seeso). 222 Hyde Street, 8 p.m., $10
NEW DRAG SHOW/PARTY: With a dress code of "Just do you, but like, times 1,000," drag hostess VivvyAnne ForeverMore launches the first of a new monthly at the Stud, replacing the drag party she previously co-hosted SomeThing. It's called "Vivvy's Grand Opening," and it sounds like it's a bit more dance party and a bit less of a drag show in sets, with "a dancefloor for queers and their followers" and "a drag feeling for the drag intimate and drag shy." SATURDAY, MARCH 11
PURIM COSTUME PARTY: Did you know that Purim is like "the Jewish Halloween"? Well, not exactly, but sometimes costumes are involved, and it's also been called "Jewish Mardi Gras," and BrokeAss Stuart likes to celebrate it, as he will be this year with a costume party at Codeword in SoMa. You can attend whether you are Jew or goyim, and the party will feature tunes from GO BANG! and mini-pizzas shaped like hamentashens (for sale). SUNDAY, MARCH 12
SUMMER OF LOVE STREET FEST: Sunday Streets this year is going to be all Summer of Love themed, in honor of the 50th anniversary, with the street closure fests featuring exhibits, themed booths, and the like. It's in collaboration with the group It's Your District (IYD), and this first one on Valencia Street should be a family-friendly hoot. Valencia Street from Duboce to 26th, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., free
COMMUNAL BRUNCH PARTY: In celebration of the upcoming cookbook Feed Your People, this smorgasbord brunch is happening at the Mission's 18 Reasons, featuring some of the recipes in the book including challah and cinnamon buns from chef Gabi Moscowitz, and ratatouille from Frances and Octavia chef Melissa Perello. MONDAY, MARCH 13
ANTI-TRUMP POSTCARD PARTY: Join drag doyenne Juanita More at this gay gathering in the Castro to oppose the sitting President, a postcard-writing party in conjunction with the national effort called The Ides of Trump. Be one of the (hopefully) millions to inundate the White House with postcards and letters on March 15, with the help of postcards supplied and designed by local artists Colton Long, Elliott C.
