Business partners Chris Cohen, Andrew Kelly, Ericka Shell, Will Marshall, and Carson Beker, are not, as you might guess from the slightly satanic atmosphere they've concocted at their new bar Old Devil Moon, a coven. Admittedly, the first three are Cicerones, which does sound somewhat shamanistic, but really, that term refers to certified beer sommeliers: The only potions they'll be pouring are beer, wine, and cocktails.
Old Devil Moon sports 20 taps, with beer selected as expertly as you might expect, and its mixed drinks are aided by taps of Fernet Francisco, Sutton Cellars vermouth, and Old Grand Dad Bonded rye whiskey. On the food menu, the bayou inspiration means 'po boys, as devised by consulting chef Charlie Kleinman, formerly of Wexler's. Those call for a variety of artisanal Bernal Heights ingredients, from Pauline's Pickling pickles to Pinkie's Bakery french bread to tasso ham from Avedano's Meats, all conveniently located up the street on Cortland.
Between trend-setting gastropub Old Bus Tavern, Belgian inspired BEL, Old Devil Moon (and, across the hill, shiny new Barebottle Brewing Company), the Mission Street strip in Bernal Heights is begging for a beer crawl these days.
