With a dreary weekend ahead of us, and a seemingly dreary month behind us, it's easy to write off the chill and fog as just San Francisco in summer. "The coldest winter I ever spent," and all that. But the Chronicle is here to dissuade us of that notion: Things really, actually, have been colder than usual.
Take last month for example. We don't expect July to be warm, but we do hope it will be warmer than February. Yet the paper points out that the average-high temperature last month was 65.2 degrees, while it hit 66.4 degrees in February (as an important note, we're talking about highs here, not the average temp overall).
August, of course, will be August — providing just enough sunshine to get us excited about Indian summer but keeping things foggy enough to mean no beach days. Which, hey, that's OK (September will be here soon enough).
Factors playing into recent chills are likely both real and imagined. Yes, it was the coldest July in three years, however the Chron suggests that the more important factor may be psychological: Last winter was much warmer than usual thanks to El Niño. In addition to rain, the change in ocean temps brought us warmer winter months.
Basically, we're all spoiled and should get over it.
Which, as long as everyone remembers to bring layers for this weekend's Outside Lands festival (it's going to be damp and cold), we'll all manage to do just fine.
