Though the profitability/profligacy of Super Bowl 50 is still the subject of debate, the event did right by one set of local artists in the form a of a $200,000 grant from the Super Bowl 50 committee to Brava! For Women In The Arts. Since 1986, that group has served local artists and thespians, especially women and people of color. The theater's first milestone was the purchase of its current Brava Theater Center on 24th Street, and the next, Brava hopes, is an expansion into boarded-up storefronts next door on 24th Street. The permits are in place for construction to begin on the project, whose total budget is $1.1 million, which includes space for a cabaret theater, offices and more. An opening date of early 2017 has been indicated for the complex.
“For the Super Bowl Committee to acknowledge the impact that Brava was having on the community and to recognize Brava as a space that deserves to be supported and to remain in the Mission, and 24th Street corridor, was reaffirming to us,” Brava’s Edris Cooper-Anifowoshe told Mission Local in January.
At the time, Kate Goldstein, the theater’s development manager added, that "Hopefully some of that will come from the community,” said Kate Goldstein, the theater’s development manager." And indeed that's happening now.
In addition to existing funds — sources include the California Cultural and Historical Endowment and the Mayor’s Office of Housing/Community Development — Brava is hoping neighbors and benefactors will help them meet a $25,000 goal on Indiegogo charitable giving website generosity. That campaign was launched today and has been live for a few hours. If you'd like, have a look at the promotional video Brava launched to see what they've got planned for their next act.
