While San Francisco remains in desperate need of more vertical housing, it is harrowing to witness the unfurling of such staid, almost intentionally watered-down units pop up around the city. The most recent example is this 12-story building designed by Handel Architects, which would replace the Tower Car Wash space at 1601 Mission.
A great use of space, sure, but it could be taller. And sadly, it isn't the aesthetically innovative building we need to see more of in the city.
Anyway, according to SocketSite, the unit, still wading in approval limbo, would feature 220 condos and "over 7,300 square feet of retail space and an underground garage for 97 cars." The structure would measure around "120 feet in height across the trapezoidal-shaped site."
A public hearing is scheduled for April 7.
