In honor of the golden anniversary of the Super Bowl, i.e. Super Bowl 50, which will be taking over San Francisco in T-minus 23 days, North Beach pizza man Tony Gemignani (Tony's Pizza Napoletana) is serving up a pie topped with solid gold. Well, gold flakes anyway. The price: $100. And it's not even that big a pizza either.
The announcement came via Facebook, prompting Inside Scoop to dub Gemignani "the George Lucas of pizzaioli" though this gold business brings to mind Donald Trump for me, personally.
On the hundred-dollar, wood-fired pie you'll also find some other luxe ingredients: white truffles; 24-month San Daniele prosciutto; Far West Fungi’s clamshell, lion’s mane, and yellow oyster mushrooms; fromage blanc and Carmody cheese from Bellwether Farms; and Grande whole milk mozzarella, a sprinkling of mâche, and Maldon salt.
And, rest assured, though this is a nice bit of marketing, it is also for a good cause. Gemignani will only be making 50 of these “Super Gold Pizzas,” between now and Game Day on February 7, and all proceeds will benefit the NFL-affiliated Kick Hunger Challenge.
Something tells me, in these baller times, the pizza will sell out well before then. Even though the tech wealthy might be feeling a little less rich this week.
