Well, we now have word of who's taking the vacant Pesce space. As Inside Scoop reports, it's Sushi Ran, the acclaimed Sausalito Japanese spot, which will now be giving Castro neighborhood sushi places like Sushi Time and Takara a run for their money.
It likely will not be called Sushi Ran, however, but the new name has yet to be decided.
Sushi Ran has been in Sausalito for nearly 30 years, since 1986, owned by respected restaurateur Yoshi Tome. The restaurant garnered a Michelin star back in 2007 and 2008, and has been a platform for a number of acclaimed sushi chefs, including Mitsunori Kusakabe, who recently left to open his own place, Kusakabe, which earned its first Michelin star last year. Sushi Ran ranks among SFist's best sushi spots in the Bay Area, and Michael Bauer still considers it one of the top three places he'd recommend for sushi.
The restaurant uses local fish as well as fish sourced from the famed Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, which is flown in daily. The menu also features a number of hot dishes including, currently, a grilled beef tenderloin with wasabi salsa, and a grilled yellowtail collar.
It's appropriate that another fish-centric place should take over where Pesce left off, and hopefully the caché of Sushi Ran will guarantee it some more success than the last two restaurants in the space at 2223 Market Street, both of which shuttered within two years. Pesce closed its doors a little over a month ago.
