Everyone's favorite Nordstrom Rack assault story is back in the news as the woman caught on surveillance video punching another woman who told her to quiet her child down has had her day in court. As KRON 4 reports, 27-year-old Terrie Vaiasaga Elzie was actually shopping in Colma with her 2-year-old nephew that fateful day on November 3, 2014, when in the checkout line she encountered 20-year-old Natalie Bree Hajek-Richardson. As the story goes, Hajek-Richardson was irritated by the screams of Elzie's nephew and claims she asked her "nicely" to try to quiet the child. Elzie allegedly reacted angrily and told her to mind her own business, to which Hajek-Richardson replied, "Go to hell."
That's when things got uglier. Elzie exited the store first and then waited for Hajek-Richardson to come out, at which point, according to prosecutors, "Elzie attacked her, punching her in the mouth twice, pushing her to the ground and sitting on her."
The story, of course, resonated with parents and child-haters alike, and spread far and wide.
Hajek-Richardson was pretty well beaten up, but remorseless when she spoke to the media after the incident. She said it wasn't the first time she'd told someone to quiet down their kid, and she said she wasn't going to apologize for it "'cause that's who I am. I say really what I want."
She suffered fractures along her gum line, broken teeth, and needed several root canals to fix the damage.
In the hearing Thursday, Elzie's defense attorney argued that she "hadn’t intended to assault [Hajek-Richardson], but the situation got out of hand" after she waited outside to speak to her. Apparently Elzie became most upset when the 2-year-old repeated the phrase "go to hell" back at her. He also pleaded for leniency in the case saying, “She’s a young lady who’s never been in trouble before, she’s a high school graduate with a college education, and she’s gainfully employed."
Elzie pleaded no contest to felony assault charges, and will be sentenced on August 4. As part of the plea deal she will get no more than six months in jail, but may only get probation. She's currently free on $50,000 bail.
