If all goes according to plan, Golden State Warriors President and COO Rick Welts may have a number of parade engagements in the next twelve days. As his team continues its contest for the NBA Finals, the 58-year-old gay sports executive has been named an SF Pride celebrity grand marshal.
As announced yesterday by Pride, Welts will be catapulted into the ranks of previous marshals like Chaz Bono and Cyndi Lauper. Last year, celebrity grand marshals were Janet Mock, Roberta Kaplan, and Ross Mathews.
Welts came out to the public in 2011 in a front page New York Times article. “This is one of the last industries where the subject is off limits,” he said at the time, during which he was president of the Phoenix Suns. This is Welts' fourth year with the Warriors and his 39th in the league overall.
In a statement, the grand marshal-elect said that the parade provides him an opportunity “to shine light on the contributions the LGBT community makes to sports, every day, all over the world.”
By the way, the question of where a parade for the Warriors will be held, should they win it all, has been answered: Oakland.
And last, in case you needed further evidence that SF sports are very gay, here's SFist's former editor Brock Keeling reporting live from AT&T Park last night.
