Remember when Kink.com CEO Peter Acworth came out last year telling the story of his 2013 arrest for cocaine possession and subsequent immediate release from jail? Inspired in part by that, and by being accused of being insensitive to incarcerated LGBT people when he co-hosted a prison-themed circuit party on Pride weekend last year — the event was met with some semi-violent protest that, ironically, led to a few arrests — Acworth has taken up the cause of the Three Strikes Justice Center. The organization, founded in 2012, seeks to guide "prisoners and their loved ones through the difficult process of understanding Proposition 36." With the help of Kink.com's fundraising efforts, the Three Strikes Justice Center was able to facilitate the release of their first prisoner, Oakland resident Charles Lucas, who was freed from Kern Valley State Prison last weekend.

As we learn in the video above, Lucas was arrested in 2000 for drug possession, and subsequently give a sentence of 28 years to life under the Three Strikes law. He served 15 of those years, essentially for a drug charge, and as you can see he's pretty happy to be out.

Acworth says in a statement, "As someone who has made mistakes in my own life, and has seen firsthand how differently the justice system treats those with resources, and those without, this became an important and personal cause." With that in mind, Kink made the video above and continues to raise funds for the Three Strikes Justice Center so that more people can get out of prison.

Center co-founder Givelle Lamano, herself an attorney, says the organization has much to thank Acworth for in giving a much needed financial boost to their cause. "Last summer, we faced a major crisis,” she says. "Hundreds of cases that were eligible to be commuted were facing a deadline to file, and many inmates did not have enough resources to even pay for postage. We were woefully underfunded. [Acworth] heard about the cause, and because of his own experience with the justice system, offered to put together a fundraiser."

FYI, Kink is throwing another fundraiser for them, their Cinco de Kinko party, on Friday, May 1 at the Armory. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased here.
