Public service announcement: Especially if you live in Marin County, 415 numbers are quickly running out. Remain calm and get yours while supplies last.
As CBS 5 reports, when February 1 rolls around, the new 628 area code goes into effect in what is being called an "overlay." It's like the housing crunch, but for phone numbers.
The Public Utilities Commission, based on increased demand, added the 628 area code to the current 415, which has been in use since 1947 in San Francisco, most of Marin County, and some of San Mateo County.
Don't worry, you can keep your current 415 number, but if you were hoping to get one for the first time and anoint yourself a "local," you'd better hurry.
“They are asking if there still are any, but we haven’t run out quite. A lot of towns are out, though,” said a T-Mobile employee in Marin County to CBS.
San Rafael is already fresh out of 415 numbers, with Belvedere and Larkspur still holding on to a few.
