The Contra Costa coroner's bureau has identified the man whose remains were found on BART's tracks Monday morning. It's still unclear how he got on the tracks, but a spokesperson confirms that the man was probably struck by a BART train.
The man, identified as Malikyar Mirwais, a 48-year-old man from the Orange County city of Aliso Viejo, was discovered on BART's tracks between Concord and North Concord at 8:50 a.m. Monday.
BART service in the area was halted for over three hours after a BART operator reported seeing "blood and possible human remains" on the tracks.
According to BART spokesperson Alicia Trost, early Monday morning BART police had also received a report of a person walking on the tracks in that area. She says that BART police went out to check and didn't find anyone, "but it was still dark at that time." Police returned at daylight, checked the area again, and still didn't see anything suspicious, Trost said Monday.
Trost says that BART investigators are still trying to determine if the walker was Mirwais, as well as how or why Mirwais got on the tracks.
Officials are also working to determine why Mirwais was in the Bay Area, over 400 miles from home.
Contra Costa coroner's bureau spokesperson Deputy T. Biggs said that it appears that Mirwais was struck by a train because his body had "suffered severe trauma," but that details on his exact cause of death would not be certain until after his autopsy, which is scheduled for today.
