This just in: Popeye's on Divisadero is either in danger of closing, already closed, or getting a weird facelift, as Hoodline reports. One thing is for certain: That corner property on New Valencia Street, directly across from Nopa and Bi-Rite, could be worth a lot to a lot of people, and it was definitely on the market as of April.
This almost 30-year-old Popeye's at 599 Divisadero has been closed since Wednesday and is only scheduled to be closed until Friday, as a sign on the door states. Hoodline tried to ask the workmen what was going on with what appears to be a reclaimed wood podium (!) and other stuff happening inside, but they were no help.
SFist notes no liquor license activity for the property, which would be one of the first signs that someone new was trying to go in there. Hoodline also notes no construction permits. Surely the incredibly active food blogosphere in this town would have had a bead on this one already if a reclaimed-wood-clad New California restaurant was heading into the space?! Where will Divisadero hip kids and neighborhood vets have to turn to satisfy hangover fried-chicken cravings?!
Hopefully we will have an update for you soon, if and when Popeye's reopens tomorrow.
Update: A tipster who spoke with the construction guys on site says that it will, indeed, be reopening as Popeye's on Tuesday. Thank god.
