Huge schools of anchovies moved in close to shore starting last Sunday in Monterey Bay, and the humpback whales followed. Photos like this one from Blue Ocean Whale Watch then began popping up all over, of people stunned to see the huge mammals popping their heads above water just 50 yards from shore. Typically, whales like this will only come about 100 yards from the shore, but that anchovy meal was just too hard to pass up.
In related media, please watch this lovely video of enormous schools of anchovies swimming near Scripps Pier in La Jolla.
