Funny or Die returns with another Disney parody (remember Princess Ke$ha?), this time with Kristin Bell as a disgruntled Mary Poppins, quitting her nanny gig because she's living below the poverty line. The refrain: "Just a three-dollar increase could make a living wage... I don't get these birds for free."
The federal minimum wage has obviously been a hot topic, with the Obamas recently making comments about wanting their daughters to work minimum-wage jobs, as they did in their youth, in order to appreciate what real work is like. People in San Francisco and L.A. have been griping about these billboards that have gone up recently trying to convince people that any hike in the minimum wage (S.F. has a proposal headed for the November ballot that would raise it to $15/hr by 2018) is detrimental to job creation.
Meanwhile, the Associated Press just did a story showing that 13 states that recently raised their minimum wage are adding jobs at a faster rate than states that did not. This was in response to a report earlier this year from The Congressional Budget Office saying that a minimum wage of $10.10 could bring 900,000 people out of of poverty, but would cost 500,000 jobs nationwide. As of June 1 this year, 22 states have voted in minimum wage hikes above the federal minimum, which has remained at $7.25 since 2009. As recently as 2007 it was a measly $5.85.
