The US Coast Guard is out in force near the Golden Gate Bridge this afternoon, seeking a sailor who might have fallen into the water as a distressed boat sank in the area.

According to a US Coast Guard spokesperson, watchstanders received a radio beacon distress signal from the "Alma," a 30-foot boat, at around 4:15 Monday morning from the area of Kirby Cove, which is located just west of the north side of the Bridge.

Shortly thereafter, the Coast Guard was notified that a boat matching the Alma's description was seen on the rocks at Yellow Bluff, an area further northeast, in the San Francisco Bay.

When Coast Guard and Southern Marin Fire Protection District crews arrived, the boat was partially submerged and "sinking fast," so divers had to be dispatched to confirm that the boat was indeed the Alma.

Though there's no word on the number of occupants that might have been on the boat “We are using every asset available to locate any possible persons in distress,” Cmdr. Donald Montoro of Coast Guard Sector San Francisco says. Update: The Coast Guard later said that they believe only one person was aboard the Alma at the time of the mishap.

Montoro asks anyone with information about the Alma or its operator to call the Coast Guard Sector San Francisco command center at (415) 399-3520.
