If you've driven over the lovely (and not at all worrisome) new span of the Bay Bridge anytime int he past month or so, you may have noticed the old trestle span to the south is slowly being disassembled and disappearing as the weeks go by.
It's all part of Phase One of Caltrans' Eastern Span demolition project, which is currently tearing apart the 2-mile span, piece by piece, roughly in the order it was built in the 1930s. When the first phase of the project is completed, the old S-curve will be gone and crews can finally connect the new span's pedestrian path to Yerba Buena Island. Phases two and three will involve dismantling the truss spans that connect to the Oakland shoreline and finally removing the underwater foundations, which may not be completed for another 3-5 years.
