Tonight, ladies and gentlemen, there will be a gay roller disco in an old church at Fillmore and Fell Streets. Are you going? Somehow I had not heard about the Church of 8 Wheels (I'm not subscribed to enough rollerskating message boards, clearly, or reading Haighteration enough), but they first got permission in November to use the empty Sacred Heart Parish as a roller disco venue, and the fun continues this week with an LGBT night tonight, March 18, a party called Rolligion on Wednesdays, and more skating fun on Thursdays and Fridays.
It's the project of David Miles Jr., a.k.a. The Godfather of Skate, who lives his life on 8 wheels and has been a frequent fixture of the skate scene in Golden Gate Park, and it was actually the idea of a parishioner of the church who was sad seeing it languishing for years there, empty, most of its contents and pews now sold off.
You can see a little drone video of one of the November events below. And it seems like Miles has already turned this into a weekly thing, with guest DJ nights on Thursdays. Admission is $10, and skate rentals are $5, and the parties go from 7 to 10 p.m.
All I can say is this is an awesome nightlife development, and there should be club nights in all of our city's unused churches, STAT.
