An unidentified man was struck and killed by a southbound freight train crossing into Berkeley from Albany this morning just after 9 a.m. The accident happened in an area not near a road crossing, and details are unclear. But the train remained stopped blocking a number of surface streets, including Gilman (and therefore the freeway offramp there) for several hours this morning.
According to Berkeleyside, the train could not stop quickly and crossed four surface streets, Gilman, Camelia, Cedar and Virginia, before coming to a standstill.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Police and Union Pacific investigators are still investigating.
