Sightglass Coffee, the celebrated SoMa coffee temple and preferred hangout of tech media types, opened their second location on 20th Street in the mission this weekend, pushing the neighborhood block into peak hipness.
Although the new space is smaller than the massive two-story operation at the original on Seventh Street, the Mission-based Sightglass boasts a similarly modern look that combines the slickness of an Apple Store with a woodsy, rough-hewn vibe of a particularly nice National Park building. Expect clean white mosaic tiles and lots of polished steel-on-wood. Also like the original, you'll find coffee and espresso brewed via a variety of methods and pastries for sale. The new location also has it's own vintage Probat roaster and everything sold in the shop will be roasted in-house, so neighbors can expect to smell roasting coffee wafting through the air daily.
The 20th Street block between near Alabama Street has been experiencing a bit of a renaissance in recent years. The impossibly hip neighborhood cocktail lounge Trick Dog was just named as a James Beard semifinalist for "Best New Bar Program." Known for their cocktail menus as much as their cocktails, their latest design is in the style of an annual report. Chef Thomas McNaughton's Central Kitchen was wildly anticipated when it opened on the block in 2012. Salumeria, where one can purchase $11 sandwiches and handmade pasta, also made a splash on the food blog scene when it opened last year. Atlas Café, across the street, has been a hip café institution since 1996, when hip cafés were the territory of slam poets and sitcom backdrops.
The neighborhood even got its own free street festival last year, when the neighborhood businesses teamed up with NoisePop for the 20th Street Block Party.
Sightglass 20th Street is open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Sundays.
