The death of inspirational anti-apartheid revolutionary Nelson Mandela has prompted an international response as communities around the world remember his legacy. Here at home, Mandela forged a special relationship with the Bay Area, as evidenced by his visit to the Oakland Coliseum in 1990, shortly after being released from his 27-year imprisonment.
Watch a snippet of Mandela's Oakland visit, where he praises the Bay Area as a source of inspiration for him to continue the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa. His Bay Area remarks being at the 1:00 mark:
It is you, the people of Oakland, the people of the Bay Area, who have given me and my delegation strength and hope to go back and continue the struggle. Remember that we respect you, we admire you, and above all, we love you all.
Rest in peace, Mr. Mandela.
