Once again forcing the question as to why they can't do it all the time, BART will be running trains all day and all night during the closure of the Bay Bridge starting next Wednesday night.
The bridge is going to be closed for five and a half days, reopening Tuesday, September 3, at 5 a.m. or a little bit sooner, and you can expect BART to get a whole lot more crowded during that time. But luckily for East Bay folks this means much easier Labor Day weekend partying with no worries about drunk driving or (gasp) AC Transit. During that time, workers will be doing the work to redirect and restripe the roadways from the tunnel on Yerba Buena Island to the new bridge decks. And yay! No more S-curve!
A total of 14 stations will be open for overnight BART service Wednesday through Monday, which will run hourly between SFO and Concord, and between El Cerrito Del Norte and Dublin/Pleasanton, with transfers available at MacArthur Station.
For those who live on Treasure Island, special permits are available to allow them to travel on the western span of the bridge from San Francisco.
Also, CHP is already warning everyone not to get all distracted by the majesty of the new bridge when driving on it for the first time. It just might get you killed. Also, even though the new bridge has shoulders on the right side of each deck, you are not allowed to pull off onto them unless your car is broken.
