Grab a bowl of popcorn, it's an inside-baseball, media geek three-way: famous media entities Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, the Huffington Post, and a former Man Show host are embroiled in an angry media beef all of a sudden. It's like a touchy-feely West Coast version of House of Cards. So let's binge:

Lite Gov. Newsom went on Adam Carolla's radio show earlier this month to promote his new book about how government should be more like Angry Birds. If you'll recall, Stephen Colbert more or less called out Gavin's book as a pile of randomly assorted bullshit buzzwords during the very same book tour. It's a wonder Gavin even keeps going after that. He's a relentless self-promoter and even if he doesn't make it to the Governor's Mansion, we should give him an award or at least make him the celebrity face of L'Oreal for Men or something.

After losing the Colbert endorsement, Newsom's PR strategy shifted to appeal to a more conservative realm: talk radio listeners. As it turns out, Carolla is also allergic to Gavin Newsom's bullshit — albeit in the opposite way. When Newsom quoted a statistic about the number of Black and Latino families that don't have access to a checking account, Carolla wanted to know why. Huffington Post San Francisco Associate Editor Robin Wilkey did everyone a public service and transcribed the segment:

"What's wrong with them?" asked Carolla. "I want to know why those two groups don't have access. Are they flawed?"

Newsom quickly attempted to steer the conversation elsewhere. "I don't want to have a sociological debate," he said.

"I want to know why [Blacks and Latinos] are struggling," Carolla continued. "Do Asians have this problem? Why do so many [Blacks and Latinos]? Blacks have been here longer than we have. What about Asians--they were put in internment camps. Are they at the check cashing places?"

"Why are [these problems] concentrated in the African American community?" Newsom responded. "Look at the history. It's naïve to suggest that those things don't matter.

Now Carolla has taken the fact that he appeared in a headline as a sign that the left-leaning news site is trying to brand him as a racist, while also hiding behind crap politicians like Newsom whose only job is to get re-elected. Using the metaphor of a broken down car, Carolla responds with a passionate epic, railing against "the system," calling HuffPo "pussy cowards" who just "sit there with your fucking coward hands over your fucking little cowardly soup coolers." [Ed. Note: What?] It's an amazing rant that goes on for 10 minutes of airtime. He gets to calling Gavin's bullshit at about the 2:40 mark:

Carolla: I don't blame Gavin Newsom. Gavin's a nice guy who doesn't want to do shit and doesn't want to say a word because he wants to be re-elected. If he starts speaking his mind, and he know's the truth — and by the way Gavin Newsom? He comes from a broken family too. Right. His dad was the head counsel for Getty Oil, OK? His dad's an attorney for Getty Oil. He didn't grow up without having to make ends meet. That's just bullshit.

Afterwards, Carolla compared himself to a pirate captain and encouraged listeners to "keep supporting his so-called pirate ship."

The Huffington Post, which hosted Newsom's scrawlings during his brief career as a celebrity blogger, declined to comment this afternoon. Probably because it's hard to argue with a radio host who also believes he's the captain of a pirate ship.
