Much-maligned kicker David Akers has been released from the Niners' roster after the worst season of his career. In news that is only surprising inasmuch as it comes later than expected, Akers has been dumped after two seasons with the Niners and (we're guessing) rampant coronary damage to fans across the city.
Akers became a whipping boy for frustrated football fans after making only 69% of regular season field goal attempts, receiving death threats via Twitter and bearing the brunt of the city's enraged sportsbar shouting. You might recall the 38-yard attempt that bounced off the left upright in the NFC Championship Game or the 39-yard miss in the Super Bowl was reversed only by a roughing-the-kicker penalty.
In a painfully formal Dear John of a press release, 49ers general manager Trent Baalke had this to say:
"The 49ers would like to thank David for his service, dedication and leadership over the past two years ... He is a true professional who represented himself and this organization with class. We wish him, and his family, all the best."
According to Akers' agent, he has no intention of retiring.
It's been a rollercoaster of emotions with the 49ers this year, but hopefully with Alex Smith and Akers both off the team, the 49ers have dropped some emotional baggage and will have room to grow into the 2013/14 season.
