Few things excite us more than prison and death row -- specifically, last meals that, except for Texas, are a part of a condemned prisoner's last day. (Our favorite has to be that of Thomas J. Grasso, who used his final words to complain about his last meal, saying, "I did not get my SpaghettiOs, I got spaghetti. I want the press to know this." Genius.) Jake Godby (of Humphry Slocombe fame) is also a fan of final meals. Enter his semi-monthly Last Meal Blue-Plate Specials at Truck.
Tonight, Godby offers up the final meal of Lonely Hearts killer Martha Beck. Along with partner in crime Raymond Fernandez, Beck would swindle and kill lonely women they fond in personal ads. Betweem 1947 and 1949 they are believed to have murdered as many as twenty women.
Executed in 1951, Beck's final words were: "My story is a love story. But only those tortured with love can understand what I mean ... the Death House has only strengthened my feeling for Raymond." As for her final meal? Her written instructions were: "Fried chicken. No wings, French Frys [sic], lettuce and tomato salad."
Godby's menu tonight features a comparatively gourmet take on the Beck's aforementioned meal. Check it out:
