Speaking of bars, two local bars noted for catering to two (dwindling?) minority groups were declared a historic landmarks by the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday. Sam Jordan's in Bayview and Twin Peaks in the Castro have heavy African-American and queer clientele, respectively.
Sam Jordan's has been in the Bayview for over five decades. And its first owner, Sam Jordan, was the city's first black mayoral candidate. Twin Peaks, crudely referred to as the Glass Coffin, opened in the 1930s, but turned into a gay bar in the 1970s after it was purchased by two lesbians.
Inside Scoop has a nifty gallery of the two bars here. We strongly recommend checking both of them out, especially if dive bars are your bag.
