On this day in 1933, the Eighteenth Amendment (AKA prohibition) was repealed under the President Franklin Roosevelt, and thus thousands of drunk chicks in public were born many years later. You can celebrate the end of government-mandated sobriety by celebrating Repel Day tonight. Here are the top five things to do:
21st Amendment: Of course, SOMA's 21st Amendment (named in honor of the Amendment that released the 18th Amendment) is having a Repeal Day party. The festivities start at 4pm with a march around SOMA demanding the repeal of prohibition and the passage of the 21st Amendment. The march will be followed by a Speakeasy Party in their mezzanine for a special featuring poker, prohibtion-cocktails for and great fun. You will need the special password to gain entry. This will be tweeted today around 1pm-ish.
Hogs & Rocks: Celebrate this special day at this special place in the special Mission. Staring today and going through the weekend, Hogs & Rocks will offer $5 glasses of their Whiskey Barrel Punch (pictured above) and $5 shots of Old Fitzgerald Bourbon. Cheers.
Presidio Social Club: Your favorite foie gras purveyors will offer a one-day-only specialty cocktail, tipping a hat at all those law breakers out there. The Scofflaw ($10) is a combination of rye whiskey, dry vermouth, grenadine, and lemon juice, served up with a twist that can be enjoyed at the PSC Bar where the era of prohibition feels very much so alive.
Cantina: Repeal Day costume ball, anyone? Come dressed as your favorite cocktail (par example), while getting wasted on top-drawer booze concoctions. Starts at 8pm and goes. Tickets cost $10, and, as Tablehopper points out, all proceeds benefit the Barbary Coast Conservancy of the American Cocktail.
Intervention: Did you watch Monday's Intervention? Heartbreaking. The most harrowing scene (out of many) had to be when the prickly daughter played back her drunk mom's gin-soaked voicemail. The most touching was when the daughter cried and begged her mom to go to rehab. God, we love this show so much. Watch it here to learn about the perils of alcohol abuse and not giving your kids enough love and attention.
