Chuck Nevius might be over it, but several local anti-domestic violence advocacy groups aren't happy with Ross Mirkarimi's plea deal. In a press conference on the steps of City Hall this afternoon the Domestic Violence Consortium, La Casa De Las Madres and Futures Without Violence gathered supporters to call on Mayor Lee and the Board of Supervisors to remove Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi from office.

In an earlier statement, Kathy Black of La Casa (the group responsible for that Mirkarimi-inspired anti-domestic abuse billboard) pointed out the awkwardness of having a Sheriff who pled guilty to false imprisonment:

It is a true irony that the person in charge of imprisoning criminals and overseeing rehabilitation programs in our local jails is guilty of false imprisonment. This is a national embarrassment. That Sheriff Mirkarimi thinks he can plead guilty one minute and swear to ‘move forward’ as Sheriff in the next is simply unacceptable.

Anyhow, Mayor Lee still hasn't made up his mind on the issue yet, but the general consensus in the local media seems to be that Lee will just let Mirkarimi ride out his term with little or no actual ability to get anything done. The next question then, is whether the notoriously controlling former Supervisor will actually sit quietly in the Hall of Justice for three more years or if he can actually keep his mouth shut long enough for the judge to accept the plea deal.
